Burning down cities? Similar to holocaust?
Is it anyway I could prevent this, using the editor? I think it's rather silly that a civ could just burn down a large city to the ground. If you did that, at least all other civs should be angry, it's no better than using nuclear weapons I think.
If you look at it this way: when burning down the city, killing all those thousands of civilians, should be some kind of war crime, almost worse than anything happened IRL Allthough I think it should be possible if it is in ancient times or a small city size 1 or something, but a larger city with much more people should cause international incidents and war all over. I think killing all those people is just as bad as Holocaust or something, perhaps even worse, you could kill millions this way in the game. All in all, I think killing civilians, with bombardments or nuke or burning down, should cause some kind of incidents. So if anyone know how to prevent this is anyway? What if Firaxis would make a new wonder called Human Rights or something that would prevent civs from using this option when capturing a city. |

well, you're not really killing them.. when you raze a city, you'll get 1 worker for every pop i believe.. so it's more like destroying the city, and taking the civilians as slaves. And yes, the AI will be angry at you (not only the one you are at war with) if you raze cities on a regular basis

I think its not 1 worker for every 1 pop, but 1 worker for every 2 population, so that means many millions died.

I was glad at first when I heard you could raze cities in Civ-III but come to think of it it is very unrealistic the way they did it in the game. You can just burn down an entire civilization and then make peace with the remainder a few turns later.
I remember one time when the Russians pissed me off because they declared war for no reason, so I asked the powerful Greeks to declare war on them and a few dozen turns later I happened to look back and all of Russia was GONE (razed to the ground, its population slaughtered or enslaved). I think that the "holocaust" policies of the Germans when capturing the Slavic lands in the East can be more adequately symbolized in Civ-III through other methods, like "rush building" under a Totalitarian government (which costs citizens, presumably because of mass terror used to rush work) or making a lot of the population into workers (enslavement) just as soon as you capture a city and crush the resistance. Basically, the idea is that mass enslavement/extermination should be a slower process, not just something you can accomplish with a click of your mouse. First you have to cow the population into submission and keep it from culturally revolting by installing a lot of military in the city, then as soon as you accomplish that you can start to haul off the citizens as workers and using "terror-production" to simultaneously rid yourself of foreign nationals and rush build improvements. You can also replace the lost population points with good honest workers from your fatherland, who you won't have to worry about keeping such tight control over since they're not foreigners. |

Its just a game....
You can just say, all those people left the city and moved to the suburbs, or perhaps a life in the countryside suited them better.
I kinda enjoy razing a city now and then. I wish they had a graphic of it actually burning down... |

Well then you might not like the way I treated the Romans in one of my games. I razed every one of their cities to the ground, and then took their workers, loaded them in galleys, and sent them out to sea where they all sunk.
But you know, its just a game , and a good one at that. Now only if I could get rid of those error messages...

Without the option to burn down captured cities, victory by conquest would be a huge pain in the ass. You would have numerous cities producing nothing due to corruption, and you would have to put a couple of units in them to quell resistance and then to defend. Burning them down seems to be the best option to avoid this.
