Sieges!
Recently, I've started to lay seige to rich cities, attacking any sorces of trade from or to teh city, repeatedly sacking the city (but never changing the nationality) and when there's no nearby ships, trading with the nearby settlments to have a slow, constant income. So far, I've made Cartegena, one of Spains richest and largest cities, into a poor, weak city, that (luckily for me) the Spanish Treause Fleet is headed to (and won't they be happy to see the destruction I have wrought unto the city they were heading to?
 )But from what I can tell so far, sieges are very effective at getting money, weakening cities, and having something to do while you wait for someone to come.
