Appearance of military leaders

Are there any hidden restrictions for a military leader appearing?

The unit has to be elite and win a battle(presumably against a non-barbarian)

does the unit have to be defending?

does the unit have to be at full HP when victorious?

No, I believe the chance of getting a leader is greater on attack (I can't remember the probability), but both attack and defense can generate leaders.

really? I never really paid attention to attack/defense when I get them, but I can recall a good specifc 3 times on defense, but cant seem to remember any on attack.

can u get leaders with ancient cavalry/crusaders?

The odds are 1 of 16 on attack, 1 of 32 on defense. With the HE, it becomes 1 of 12 and 1 of 24, respectively.

Also, leaders cannot be generated if you have another one. (not sure about the specifics)

See SirPleb's article and the thread associated with it.
