Conquests - is it worth it?

I'm a pretty disconnected game player. I just recently found out about the Conquests expansion after seeing references to it on this board. Sounds like more civs, more govs, more units. I really wasn't feeling like the old game was deficient in any of these areas, but I imagine there is probably more and now I'm wondering if it's time to upgrade.

Is Conquests really cool? Does it make the game better? Thanks.

I would strongly recommend getting it. It improves the game A LOT.

Also, if Deity feels too easy, you can try Sid.

C3C apparently has a Demi-god skill level between Emperor and Deity. I like that, I find Emperor a little too easy and Deity a little too difficult. I tend to fool around more than I should so prefere playing at Emperor
...but I'll play Deity if I'm really wired on coffee...

It is an improvement but you asked 'is it worth it' and, priced £20 as it was when i got it, the answer is no.

Could somebody help me understand how to go from vanilla Civ III to C3C? I've seen quite a few posts on this board about it, but it's not quite clear to me if it's a completely separate version of the game or more like a patch you pay for and install ON TOP of vanilla.

I'm not very tech savy and I'm afraid of messing up the whole game. I had to call Atari's support just to get vanilla to give me more than a black screen...something to do with the monitor refresh rate. I think I saw something about PTW having changes that aren't included in C3C either, so I'm totally confused.

Thanks for any help with this.

It's kinda like a patch, but you have to buy it from somewhere as a CD and install it as if it were a separate game. You need to have vanilla installed, though.

I found my copy of it for $10, and it helped me to play Civ again for 4 months. I'd say that's pretty much worth it.

The new stuff is cool, but the conquests themselves are well worth the price of admission. There are nine of them. I played Rise of Rome for at least 20 hours, and most of the others are good without being a chore.

I can't really see the point, considering all the excellent mods available for Vanilla with units, governments, techs, you name it. Unless something is fundamentally different, which I didn't think there was, I'd say stick to Vanilla and download the free modpacks instead. But then, I never played Conquests..

Umm, as someone pretty involved in modding, I can assure you the modding possibilites for C3C are lightyears ahead of anything possible in VC3. Already PtW was a big step forward.
In fact, I would even say you couldn't mod VC3 at all. Only rename stuff, or add animations. While there are several Mods for PtW and especially C3C who feel like a new game, each employing dozens of mechanism you cannot find in the unmodded game at all.
I would agree that 30€/$ aren't worth it for an occasional player. 10 are.
And there are several fundamental changes in gameplay. The biggest one is the introduction of SGLs. Or better, the fact MGLs can no longer rush Great Wonders (but now Armies are really powerful). That completely changed the game.

Well, from what I've been reading there are quite a few more civs to play, like the Spanish and Ottomans, and vanilla doesn't have either the agricultural or seafaring traits...or am I getting it mixed up with PTW??? I've only played vanilla too, so the discussions of PTW and C3C are sometimes confusing.

C3C adds the PTW Civs, and then more civs of its own, so you have 31 CIvs to pick from. It also adds Seafaring and Agricultural traits, and generally takes the game to a whole new level. PTW basically added a few Civs and improvements, and Multiplayer. There were no major changes to the game in that one.

C3C includes the PTW core, so you can play Vanilla Civ3, PTW, or C3C once you buy and install it. I think most people anymore play either Vanilla, , or C3C, with not much PTW being played (except for PTW players who haven't bought C3C yet. )

As to whether it's worth it, I was a beta-tester, and I turned around and bought a copy as soon as it hit the shelves.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm just going to break down and buy it now. Just the knowledge that the game I'm playing isn't quite as cool as it could be is making me need to have it.

Same here. I even bought it despite I knew I'll get a free, autographed copy...but I couldn't wait that long.

one word: stack movement.

its worth it just for that. since im in the habit of moving giant stacks of artillery to bombard cities late in the game i must say i like being able to get large numbers of them into position all at once.

I have Play the World, and I think I may stick with that. At least, until I finish my current game, if I ever do.

C3C offers also
-- civil engineers for eliminating totally worthless cities at edges of empire
-- fascism govt for war mongers
-- enhanced communism for an alternative to democracy
-- enhanced air power and anti air options
-- slightly improved naval units
-- enhanced movement icon buttons

Haven't gone back to PTW after C3C.

When the Demogame players were discussing whether to change from Vanilla to C3C, I said that I'd play if the game was C3C, but if they were going to play Vanilla, I wouldn't even lurk.
