How to deal with Corruption?

sup fellaz,
First off the bat, sweet webby. Im obviously a newbie to CIV3 but have played previous CIV's.

Q: What is up with corruptacy and wastage?? I have a huge civilisation yet about 75% of my cities are only producing 1 or 2 shields the rest is getting lost in corruptacy and wastage. I recently changed my government to Democracy and it made no difference, tried putting in Courthouses still little effect, any other suggestions??

Q: One more quick one, resources anyone know a good thread or section of this website that can explain to me how resources work? Some cities on the same continent that are connected via roads cannot produce some units yet others can, it's driving me crazy!!!

Any help would be appreciated thanks guys! Keep it pimpin', oh i mean CIV'in!

What I do is that I grow city up to 12, then create so many speacial units what is possible without starvation and put to produce either money or science. Or if you have Conquest, you can also put there civil engineers and then you can produce some small imps or units.

That is the concept behind. Huge Civ = huge corruption.
A big change from Civ2, but once you get used to it, you should like it.
Note in the very first versions, corruption was a bit too high; but as of C3C 1.22, it's fine.
There are several was to decrease corruption for about 40% (CHs, Police Stations, the Forbidde Palace, WltKDs), but the overall problem stays the same: Once your empire has reached a certain size, any additional cities are essentially not productive. Or, you use Communism; in that case, corruption is equally spread among cities - but, after reaching a certain size, overall corruption hurts as well.
Get used to it .

777's suggestion if so-called 'Specialists Farms' works great in C3C, but yields no big benefits in the earlier version.

While I'm sure someone will post a link to a better explanation, here is a start...

You've pretty much got it understood with resources - luxury and strategic resources are 'spread' through your empire by roads, harbours and airports. But these links can be broken by enemy units blocking your trade routes - so, if all the roads between cities A and B are blocked (ie there is no clear path), then cities A and B won't share their resources.

What you're describing seems very strange, though - check the "resource box" (top left) in the city screen, and check if both cities have access to all the resources needed to build the unit you're trying to build (check the civilopedia for resource requirements). If a city lacks a resource, then one of your trade links is being disrupted, probably by an enemy unit, or else by a missing road link. Post a screenshot of the territory around the offending city, and we might be able to help you a bit more...

Welcome to CFC!!

go commie - then strategically place the secret police HQ

people will say that this makes your core cities less productive and they are right

I would rather have far flung cities somewhat productive - versus the one shield nightmare

Chances are, if you have of an empire so large that 75% of your cities only produce 1 shield, you've already won the game. More production and commerce should make no difference.

One thing the deisgners of Civ3 tried to prevent is the snowball effect of more cities producing more units to capture more cities to produce more units, etc. The game only allows a certain number of productive cities - more than enough to win - but not an infinite number like civ2.

I could not agree more.

However, while we're taking Xerxes for the final ride on a huge map, we usually don't slacken the reins totally in case the above mentioned mightiness translates to 3 in absolute terms.
