Cultural victory.

Seems to be one of the more difficult ways to win a game.

Once, when i was able to kill off an AI (see the killing an AI thread), i couldnt help but get a cultural victory and my civ was crap, very little culture (nothing but modern wonders, despotism until 1300 AD, etc), and i used nukes like crazy. This was on a easy level of difficulty and pre-patch.

I've tried to gain a cultural victory since and it completey eludes me. I've had all, or nearly all, the great wonders, etc., and no cigar.

Unless your civ is huge, you will not acquire the necessary culture points until the 20th century. Also, you have to have twice the culture points of anybody else to win with total culture. I have only done it by amassing 20,000 in one city, and this also doesn't normally happen until the 20th century.

If you can stand ploughing through all my waffle, there's a fairly detailed account of a culture victory on the thread below. I won with an initial build of 14 cities, added one more later in the game and captured a few more (mostly by cultural absorption). The key is to get all the basic points in early (you get a doubling bonus when they stand for 1000 years) plus a few Wonders, etc.

I've seen 20+ cities recommended, and there also a thread somewhere with Clutch-3 relating his "Culture rush" strategy in which he ended up with some crazy number like 100 cities (nearly all small of course).

Here's a link to Clutch's post:

and another one to some figures that I worked out which can be handy when assessing a) how many turns left in the game and b) how the 1,000 year terms relate to turns (two different ways of looking at the same info).

As long as you can also achieve the condition of getting double the culture points of your nearest rival, 100,000 pointers shouldn't be too hard. Of course all the usual caveats apply - right civ, good map, good number of civs, etc. Nothing works all the time with Civ 3!!

Lightbulb NOW i understand.

What a dummy me is. Thanks for the replies. I took a look at the last save from the game i was posting about and...

I had 144k culture points but damn India had like around (guesstimate from histograph) 80-90k. So no victory.

I also build my temples too late, ie, i dont get the doubling effect soon enough (from the cultural advisor screen).

I have an idea that it might be easier with certain combinations of map size and number of civs playing too - but am not sure about the details.

My last game was on a big map but only 4 civs, so they all had plenty of room to expand. Although I went well over 100,000 I just couldn't get far enough in front of Babylon (which is a great civ for culture victories anyway, due to it's starting bonuses).

Cultural victory rules! It's hard to do and it takes some planning and skill. Woo hoo!

I just wish territory/number of cities wasn't such a large factor.

Great going Sigmar2

Let us know if you also manage to achieve the "double your nearest rival's points conditions" condition to win. Do you look like you're well ahead of all the others?

With only a few civs on huge maps it should be a lot easier to get the 100,000 points as you've heaps of room to expand to a big number of cities, and less likelihood of early fights. But (depending on your difficulty setting) the AI will also have lots of room too. On Chieftain they take twice as long to build as they do on Regent difficulty - so you probably have a good chance of getting there. Good luck! Go Sigmar2!
