UN elections

I know that whomever builds the UN gets to hold an election whenever it is built, but other than that, especially if you are not the builder, how can you have an election for Secretary General after it has been built?

If you build it, every 20 turns it will ask you if you want to hold an election. If you are not the builder, you have to wait for the AI to hold an election.

Has anyone discovered any logic or pattern behind the AI scheduling elections?

It's every 11 turns, not 20.

The AI hold it when they know they'll win, which is almost never.

Follow up question though, any suggestions on how to get the UN to vote for you? Even when all the other players are polite they either vote for themselvers or Abstain. Anyone got any ideas?

So basically there's no way to win this damn scenario I created where the only way to win is diplomatic and someone else has to build the UN? God dammit, what a waste of time. I should just destroy everyone else.

I have had other nations vote for me and won via a UN victory, so it's not like they always either vote for themselves or abstain.

Figure out what turn the UN was built on - calculate where you are in the 11 turn cycle and capture the city that has it on the turn before elections would be next held. Save a SGL in reserve and drop him into the city and rush a palace - which should end the resistance instantly. Then elections will be held the next turn if you can hold the city.

Have a look at SGOTM 2. Five teams went head to head to try this variant as Germany. Four of them made it. It was a Standard Continents Monarch map set up by mad-bax. The four successful team threads are:

Peanut
Xteam
Scout
bugsy

Brilliant! Thank you. I am especially lucky as the bastards that built it just declared war on me. Unfortunately they are technologically far ahead of everyone else at the moment.

Corwise, if the others are polite, they should vote for you.
Of course, the easiest way to get a UN victory is on the turn before you complete it,
declare war on your chief rival and bribe everyone else to join in.

A Leader can rush while a city is in resistance.

If you click on my signature on the How to win on Deity Builder style, step-by-step and then scroll downwards until you get to post number 15, a Sid game, I wrote a detailed writeup which describes -with twenty american C3C v1.22 saves- how I won diplomatically having to capture the UNs from another sid AI.

You can still win diplomatically even If someone else has built it just by capturing it and on the meantime ensuring by manipulating the remaining AIS that the owner does not hold elections because everyone else will be at war with them or dislike him.

Not entirely true. You must have built the UN, have 25% of land, or 25% of pop to be on the ballot. If only one Civ meets the criteria, the next biggest is placed on the ballot. Theoretically, you can have 3 or more Civs on the ballot, although 2 is more often the case for me
