Well there will definitely be an Earth map.
Anything beyond that MAY have to wait for an expansion |

Also, I'm hoping for some specific area maps like Europe and North and Central Americas, I have ideas for scenarios for both of these that I am holding out on for Civ 4. It would make life easier if they do include these maps. My only worry is about specific regional maps is how will it work with the zoom out? |

I'll bet someone who's handy with graphics libraries could write a tool that converted satellite images to Civ map files. The basic job of outlining land masses would be easy because it would be just "blue == water." It could get fancy by guessing what type of tile the land is based on its color, but that would be gravy. You'd have to do some work, but it could get you started by doing the most tedious and tricky work. Then you just paint whatever terrain types you think fit within the land mass lines.

I don't doubt that. I just hope the world map is a large as can be made. The regional maps should be relatively straightforward too, here's hoping there is plenty of those as well. I'd say the demand is out there for this sort of thing.
I know other games have used satellite images to shape maps, will the Civ 4 graphics engine and tools used support its use?

I am sure Rhye will do a great job - as always. And no doubt, even though the actual map in CivIV may not be as large as some would like to see, within a few months of the game coming out there will be tonnes of maps in this website to cater for everyone.
