Opengl error

Here is the problem I am having with Civ (looks somewhat similar to other problems here but not quite):

It starts fine, I get to the screen to select prefs, start a new game, etc. I can change preferences, etc, and can start a new game. However, after I start a game (either quick start, pick settings or tutorial), as soon as I get to the point where I could move my settler (ie. the initial dialog box goes away) I get an invalid page fault with the opengl32.dll module.

I have a geforce mx400 with the newest drivers and have the newest directx. I actuall had been using some older drivers (from the fall sometime) and directx 8.0a when I installed the game, and after it crashed I got the newest versions of everything to no avail.
