I have had Civilization III since a few days after release, and although I have been able to play the game, it has been plagued with errors.
The first error occurs during installation; when it reaches about halfway, it gives a message: CRC error: The file D:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\Units\Bowman\bowmanAttackA.flc doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor. Abort - Retry - Ignore After choosing Retry, the installation continues until it hits another similar error, this time for chariotAttackA.flc, then for some other unit, and so on until it gets to an error in workerIrrigate.flc, at which point retry no longer works and I must hit ignore for the installation to finish. Every time I reinstall the game this happens. After Civ3 is installed, the patch installs without a hitch. I can then run the game. Unfortunately, while playing, Civ3 randomly gives Invalid Page Fault errors, usually in CIVILIZATION3.EXE but sometimes in JGL.DLL and sometimes in <unknown>. These errors sometimes occur immediately after the opening video, sometimes when creating a game, sometimes (most annoying and most often) during a game. Sometimes when I reboot and reload the last autosaved game (thank god for autosave) the error will not recur, but other times no matter what I do there is always the same error in the same turn. As you can imagine, the crashes destroy the game's entertainment value. Are the two errors manifestations of the same problem? Is my CD really corrupted, or is my CD drive responsible? Should I try to get a replacement CD from Firaxis? My CD drive is the Creative DVD5240E-1. I am running Win98 SE on a 1.0 ghz Pentium III (might be a Pentium IV, don't quite remember and I can't seem to find that information anywhere:crazyeyes ) with an nVidea Riva TNT 2 M64 and the DirectX from the game CD. Thank you for your time. ~ Kismet Last edited by Kismet; Dec 27, 2001 at 10:39 PM. |
