Science
Sorry for posting here but the forums to ask this in are down.
I just had a quick question. Can anyone tell me how to get my discovery rate beyond 20 turns? I mean, my last game it was about 1860 something and ALL civs had swordsmen and i was just getting to Gunpowder. Maybe its just me, but i doubt the AI sucks as much as i do in the science area. Oh, and my science rate is at 8 and i am only bringing in +3 gold per turn and all my cities have Libraries. Note to a Mod, if you could move this to the right forum when it becomes available i would be in debt to you. Thx abunch guys. Cyberia |

First of all, science is harder at higher difficulty levels (obviously).
to get more science make sure you have roads in all your squares around your cities. Also build plenty of settlers early on in the game, as more cities gives a larger population base and thus more revenue. make sure you get bonus resource tiles (esp. gold) for more income. research education as soon as possible to get universities... umm, thats pretty much it. if you've done all that it sounds like you've got a buggy game, 'cause the last game i played (Chieftain, admittedly) i'd finished *all* basic research by 1900 using those tactics. |

My guess is that you are playing on one of the lowest difficulty levels. On chieftain and warlord, the AI suffers penalties to production and research, and so... they suck. Building the Great Library is MUCH more useful on the higher levels, as the AI will be ahead of you in tech.
Trading is an important aspect of the game, but the AI empires are so crippled on the lower levels that you can't sell things to them. Personally, I think chieftain is harder than warlord for that reason. Basically, you end up researching everything yourself, which takes a long time, particularly in the ancient era. Tech goes much faster on Regent & Monarch (I haven't ventured higher yet), but other things are harder. -Arrian
