Giving The Game Away

Well, here's an idea I've had kicking around for a bit.

I'm really bad at finishing what I've started. I'll start a game, but when I'm done playing for the evening - I won't go back to it. I have unfinished games stretching back for ages.

So... I'm literally "giving the game away". Here is an unfinished save, for anyone to pick up and play! (Or criticise, I know what you lot can be like )

Basic details:
Civ: China
Level: Emperor
World type: Standard; all else random - but looks like a 70% water Archipelago, with a normal/temperate climate and 4 or 5-billion-yo weathering. Oh, and seriously ticked off barbarians.
Opponents:
Persia - unfortunate enough to share a landmass with us, they're now officially an OCC. Nice enough to build the Pyramids in Persepolis for us, though.
Germany - island to the East, officially Target Number One, the only reason they're in the Middle Ages is because I gifted them there for their free tech.
Spain - tiny, sharing with the Byzantines on an island to the north. Have the Status of Zeus though.
Byzantines - slightly larger, sharing with Spain. Again, only in the Middle Ages because I gifted them in.
France - an unknown quantity, on a landmass of undetermined size, though it looks like they're sharing with Babylon and probably Japan.
Japan - another unknown, speculation that they're sharing with Babylon and France.
Babylon - the biggest rival, reached the Middle Ages independently (though I did sell them some techs to help them along). They have the Temple of Artemis, and are largest after China in territory and population.

Game history:
Beijing was settled at the initial location, the wines coming as a bonus and allowing a 4-turn settler factory.

Persia was discovered, and a war was started once a Republic had been founded - the slingshot was successful, as late as ~900BC. Persia was subdued in two waves, the first capturing and securing Persepolis (Pyramids, Colossus), the second reducing them to their current state.

Explorers have been unlucky (going the wrong way, killed by barbarians, sunk due to finger slippage... ) - however we have now met everyone. The Great Lighthouse - hand-built in Shanghai - is helping speed our galleys easily round the dark areas of the map.

The Current Situation:
It is 390AD. After completing the epic work "Sun Tzu's Art of War" in the capital, Beijing, the Chinese - already the most powerful nation in the world - has entered an unprecedented age of prosperity and productivity (i.e. we just started our Golden Age). The world is there for the taking....

Have fun!

So its just a matter of building lots of riders and getting after them? Are the galley crossing viable? Do the other civs have pikes? Muskets?

Babylon are up Invention - everyone else is behind. Lighthouse gives galley access to the whole map.

I'm just like that too! I can never finish a game! In my HoF I only have 3 completed non SG games, and one was played by somebody else

This is a great idea. We're sorta like Leonardo da Vinci .

I've got a huge map regent ultimate builder game if anyone is interested .

What I like about this save is that the game can go either way, Builder-style (there's still loads of space to expand in to - there are half a dozen settlers awaiting safe escorts on the barb-infested island to the west), or Warmonger-style (1 turn from Riders, the capital set up to produce one every other turn )

Hey you did all the fun parts, now you have to deal with making invasions and lots of worker turns for rails and the ugly stuff.

From the screens I doubt there is room for any real critizing. There is always room for nitpicking.

I have just the opposite problem, I often will play after the game is won to have every tile under my borders (sick).

Were you being sarcastic calling the farmers gambit fun and invading boring?

No I like the AA and early MA parts of the game.

Invasion is not boring, I should have said tedious. The out come is not going to be in doubt, it is just a drag to pile up ships and load them and move them and unload them.

If the numbers are large enough, then it is boring to watch scores of units move and attack.

I like the invasion. I think the expanding part is tedious, and war is the only fun thing.

Hum, I seem to have not done a very good job of being clear. So let me say first, I think it is great to post the games and I suspect it can only be be good and someone will enjoy either looking at them or playing them.

The other think was I was trying to be some what jocular and teasing about the fun parts. I am sure some find any given aspect of the game fun, and I find all parts to be fun at some points, so with that let me get out of the way.

I like it.

I think this is a great idea. For someone not yet ready to play Emperor, here is a golden chance to learn risk-free.

After all, if I play and win, it was my skill that made the difference.

But, it I play and lose, it was the poor game decisions made by eldar that cost me my chance for glory.

By the way, is the vanilla, PTW or C3C?

I do the same thing with games. get bored of it and start a new one. How funny, some days ago I couldn't find anyone like me, and today I found 5 persons (2 in this thread and 3 in other ones)! I didn't finish any game at the time being! (well, I finished one, on Chieftain, but it's like nothing, I'm currently working on a Monarch in Vanilla which means in Conquests Demigod)

I also get bored often - I've only ever completed one game (and that was by domination ), and I've only ever been in the modern era once!

Nice idea btw

BTW, anyone knows where I could find some saves for Vanilla? I'm desperate I can't find anything, saves, mods, scenarios, units, anything, and I think this is the appropiate thread to ask for saves.

Head over to Game of the Month - all of the GOTM series (dating back 4 years now - they're up to 48) are playable in Vanilla, with appropriate mods etc. availablel for all of the starting saves. There are possibly end saves and 1000BC saves from some players available, for some of the games.

Do you want to try your hand at this game? Level is Monarch and with the starting position I felt like it was a piece of cake.
• Civ: Persia
• Current time is 150 BC
• Current government is Republic
• We have our Golden Age (because we just started kicking around the Iroquois with our Immortals)
• Incl. Persia there are eight civs
• Standart Pangaea map

The save is from Civ III 1.29b2 for the Macintosh, but I suppose it will work.

Lord Emsworth, thank you a lot. Trying the save right now!

Eldar, how do I get to that GOTM? I realise this is a stupid question but I really don't know where can I find this.

Edit: THANK YOU, ELDAR AND LORD EMSWORTH!

I tried Lord Emsworth's save. Doesn't work!

Easiest way is through the Game of the Month forums, or from the Game of the Month link to the left-hand side of the Civfanatics home page.
