CivIV planning thread
Well I know it is premature but I am going crazy waiting for this game and hope to explore much of it in SGs as I have found it quite a fun format. So I am thinking of starting 3 games or joining similar ones on the 26th or 27th to explore the various new features.
Slicing Samuri, Japan: Primary focus on war. Japan Aggressive & Organized; starts with Fishing & The Wheel. Looks good for early expansion and Samuri sounds quite powerful and comes at a nice time for war. Hindu Jihad, India: Primary focus on Religion. Industrious & Spiritual; Mysticism & Mining. Grab an early religion or 2 and aggressively spread it. Also spiritual so should try lots of civic configurations. Philosophical Fredrick, Germany: Primary focus on Culture, great people. Creative & Philosophical; Hunting & Mining. Try for peaceful culture, UN space win. I would prefer to start at Emperor or the equivalent unless a pretest shows a great improvement in the AI. I guess we should wait for the civIV SG thread to start sign ups but I’m curious as to what kind of games/levels people are planning/interested in.

I don't know enough about the game yet to plan an SG, but I'll be joining some (everyone is gonna rush to start their own, so I'll start out joining instead of starting).

I'll probably join or start an SG as soon as I get my copy. Play 1 quick game on my own to get to know the differences. Emperor sounds ok, even with an improved AI.

I might not be able to pick it up on day one, but as soon as I do, I'll start an OCC Space Race game.

I wonder if OCC will be doable in cIV.
I preordered, I have no speakers so I need the soundtrack to hear the music . Also that instructions manual will help. Delayed my "learning of the basics" of civ3 by a long time by not having one.

I also plan on joining SG's but will play at least one solo game. SG's seem to be a better way to learn IMO. |

Padma mentioned this weekend is likely.
I actually sent thunderfall a note saying it would be nice if it opened a bit before the release, so he should be aware of the issue (preplanning games) (it also gave me the chance to thank him for this excellent site).

some interesting options...
Reference thread
I was noticing a post which listed some of the setting possible in Civ4. I thought several were very intriguing variants to try playing Not Technology trading, Always war, alliances, one city challenge, No city razing are just some of them. No tech trading and no razing seemed the most interesting variants mostly because they are not easy in Civ. I am wondering if this is true for the AI as well. I would think so. Also we have a step above Always war - All AI are allied against you. Scary monsters! (but how I often played Heroes III). There will definitely be new variants to explore. I also like having always war and OCC "baked in" as options.

But look - take my advice on this one. Don't start your first succession game on Emperor. It won't be any fun for you guys. Try your first game on Noble and then move up from there after you have a better understanding of what's going on. Obviously you should feel free to do whatever you think will be the most fun, but don't say I didn't warn you...

Do you have some inside info, B-tester perhaps? I will play a quick one, probably 1 level lower to see the mechanics and whether I can get into a strong position. If it looks like a struggle I will start lower. I'd say I like to shoot for about a 75% chance of winning in a SG but prefer to feel like I'm loosing throughout.

I'll first play the lowest so I can learn the mechanics without the AI in my way, then I'll try emperor quivalent.

It'll be nice to start afresh, "sleeveless," as Sirian might put it. Hopefully it takes us a long time to really get the hang of the game and develop the cookie cutter strategies that were so successful by the days of C3C.
I'm up for whatever the RB gang wants to do. Perhaps a game on 'Noble' to explore the game with some of our more (ahem) experienced team members along for the ride....

Do we even know the difficulty levels? What's the easiest to hardest list? What's "even" -- Civ3's regeant level? I've heard 9 levels, but.... Where does "Noble" fit into that list?

I'm pretty sure 'Noble' is the Civ3 equivalent to 'Regeant.' No advantages either way.
