Unit Creation List
A new year, a new civ, a new need for units. The old slate has been wiped clean, and here’s the new one. We’ve got a lot of spaces to fill ![]() For those who missed out on modding with Civ3, this is a new version of the old Civilization III Flavor Units Check List. What we need is input on ideas for units to replace the standard units for the various civilizations. While most of this list is going to be blank at first, I'm going to be adding names and links to pics of Civ3 units that were created as well as ones that we had never gotten around to doing. So far, since Civ4 has just come out, the only ones you'll find here listed as completed will be the UU's already included in the game. Some terms: Unique Unit – A unit that can be built and used by only one civilization and has attributes different from the unit it replaces. Typically, in Civilization, there is only one of these per civilization. Flavor Unit – A unit that can be built and used by only one civilization and has the same attributes as the unit it replaces but is merely just a different graphic for the same unit. Sometimes they can have some different attributes. Well, for Rome, I can think of quite a few additions.
1) 'Praetorians' should probably be re-named Legionnaries (like in Civ 3). It's great that the Roman unit is a real power-house now, but the legions were feared, and crack troops. Praetorians were 'royal' guards, so to speak. I suppose this is up to the individual though, as it doesn't really make much of a matter. 2) Change the Roman regular spearman, and in its place add the flavour unit 'Triarii.' This would require a new graphic. Triarii were, in the pre-Marian Reform days (and even a little after) the guys who fought in the very back, the last stand guys. They were the veterans, and were more well off than the other troops. They had a spear (NOT a pike) a shield, and likely a cuirass (NOT chainmail) and had a helmet that was plumed (likely with two or three tall feathers sticking straight up). 3) Change the archer to a flavour unit called 'Auxillia.' The graphic should be changed slightly. The unit should be wearing very light armour, MAYBE a helmet. Archers in the early Roman army were not rich or well off, and weren't even actually Roman citizens. They consisted of other italians, gauls, greeks, etc. Well, I could go on. For a long time. |

Good job on the bump! Completely missed this first time around.
I'm not sure if these can be used. It would be hard to tie them down to individual Civs, but they are cultural group-specific. Arabian cavalry - could replace knight maybe? African spearman Warrior/spearman replacement Loads of different tanks/plane replacement possibilities. Also, you seem to have several units in there which don't actually exist in the game. I would list them but it's late, and I need to be alert and awake tomorrow morning.

Yeah, I've neglected the list, I do admit... I've been working off and on with my own units to be added to the list, but I've been so distracted trying to get my mod together that I haven't really learned how to properly make a unit with Civ4.
