Permanent Alliance?
Has anyone figured this out yet? I'm playing a cooperative multiplayer game with a friend and we'd like to have a permanent alliance to share techs and such. I can't seem to find anything in my manual and search didn't find anything here.

Permanent Alliance is available once you have researched Facism. Note that it's not available in a default game. You have to turn it on in the options before you start the game up.

I was worried about that. Facism is in quite a ways. Seems like you should be able to set that kind of thing up from the get go but oh well.

Set up teams. It worked for me, you share techs and line of sight from the start

That's what I was thinking of I think, Kevin. How do you set up teams though?

Is there any way to set up teams during a game, instead of at the start? I'd like to be able to start a game without teams, but have the option to team up once we've found each other on the map.

Can you form an 'in-game' alliance instead of setting one up at the beginning, and still have all the benefits of a pre-set one? And can you make any sort of alliance in this way before researching the tech for a Permanent Alliance? Is there a 'lesser' alliance than Permanent that can be formed in-game? Help!

I really hope somebody out there knows something about the alliances and can give me some guidance on my previous query...

When you set up a "teams" agreement ahead of time, you're playing as two leaders of the same allied nation-state: think of North and South Carolina, or the different islands of a unified Japan, or two sons of the same king who are leading armies in their father's name. They might have slightly different cultures or ways of doing things, but they are united in their central goal. This kind of teaming confers the benefits as an artificial structure, permitting "team play" which does not have a real-world analogue for long arcs of history.
The "permanent alliance" is what you get when you think of the Axis in WWII, or the UK and the US fighting together in most 20th-century wars. It is a very modern political invention; everything before that time was essentially just a "peace treaty". So, while I have not played the game, I suspect the answer is "no" -- you can either have teams from the start (imposed artificially) or you have to develop them the long way. An analogy would be letting everyone start the game with a galleon (or a battleship!) by using the game setup editor; you can either rig the game to have one at the start, or you have to wait until you can develop it on your own. |

I believe Communism also allows you to make permanent alliances, at least according to the Civilopedia.

Ok, a bug we noticed here with the teams is that if you set up a computer team it seems to default over to human control. We tried to set this up so that our "team" at the start wouldn't so heavilly outclass all the dinky little AI civilizations. Has anyone else had this problem?

There is a defensive pact, that pretty much shows the world you're in a block. I think it requires nationalism? Not sure.
