Strategic Resources (Advice Needed)
Is it normal that on a huge map, with 2 large continents, strategic resources such as saltpeter and coal only spawn in 2 squares? This seems to me to be a tad unfair to (as well as unrealistic), for example yesterday I played all the way through till the mid 1800's still using spearmen, as the only source of saltpeter spawned in ememy territory and they refused to trade it (I guess they didn't have any spare). Then when I finally researched steam power, the only source of coal spawned in enemy territory once again - depesite the fact that around 50% of my terrain was hills / plains - prime coalfield grounds according to the manual.
If this is normal, is there any way to increase the spawn rate with the editor - this "feature" is highly frustrating IMO. PS: forgive me if this has already been answered in another thread/forum - i couldn't find anything on it Thanks, C-Jam |

Yes, there is a frequency setting for resources in the editor.
But I do wonder if you're playing with the patched version? With 1.16f, resources got quite a bit more common. The situation you describe sounds very pre-patch to me. |

It's ain't rare to have cities sitting over resources, so you won't see unless you right click and select "terrain info".
Some are hard to spot, like coal. They should make a find resource button. |

I try to make sure I put a road on every square in my borders, whether it's within a city radius or not. It's very rare that I lack a resource. If you have a resource with a road to it, it will show up on your trade advisor screen. Hover the cursor over the icon, and it will tell you what city it's near. Not an ideal solution, but it does help.

Turn off the improvements on the map to check for resources. (I think it's ctrl-shift-m). Hit z to zoom out on a larger map.
I think somewhere it says there is at least 1 strategic resource per civ. Other people interpret that as one of each resource per civ but my interpretation is that it's just one of any resource per civ. If there are 16 civs there could be 1 coal, 1 iron, 1 saltpeter, 1 uranium, 1 oil, and 11 rubbers. I'm probably wrong but that's my understanding at the moment. You'd know if you were playing with the patch. There's only been one and it is 7.5 MB that you would have downloaded. |
