Alright, I have figured out a starting tech path that seems to work really well. Basically, study Wheel, Agriculture, Pottery, Writing and then Alphabet in the beginning. Since you are the first one to it, no one else will have traded techs yet. This means you can trade for virutally all the techs you missed!

While I do see the desire of getting Alphabet first, this strategy will basically ensure that you will never found a religion on even a decently hard difficulty level. One way to modify it would be to change how you get to Writing. You could instead go Mysticism, Meditation, Priesthood, Writing, Code of Laws. I have yet to fail to found a religion with Code of Laws even on Immortal with this research tree. Then you can research Alphabet after you found your religion and still be one of the first to have developed it.

Goodness, well although I played Civ 2 on the highest difficulty possible, I have been playing Civ 4 on Prince so far. I imagine that my strategy will probably work on King as well, and I will test that next game.
How is immortal anyway? After playng through my second game, Prince seems a little easy, but not a pushover. I was able to beat Civ 2 on the upper levels by beating my opponents to all of the wonders, but they don't seem to have the same effect here. |

While you might not found one of the first religions, you could still make it to taoism or catholocism. I think this is a pretty decent path.
