To trade resources with another civilization, what are the requirements? Must I build a road connecting my capital to that civilization's capital? Or do I merely require meeting that civilization?
Also, which technology do I have to research in order to trade via water routes with other civilizations? Last but not least, a confusing scenario for me : If my civilization has ONLY ONE tile of ivory. And I wish to trade my ivory for another civilization's resources...let's say iron. If both parties agree to the trade, does that mean I lose my supply of ivory? If so, does that directly mean that to trade and still have a supply of my resource that I traded, I should have at least more than one supply of it? Thanks in advance. p.s great game

Your two capitals must be connected by road or river.
When you discover Sailing, they can also be connected by coast squares. When you discover Astronomy, they can also be connected by ocean squares. Fish (1) in the trade window, it means that you only have one source of Fish, and trading it will leave your civ without access to this resource, and any bonus it provides, until the deal is cancelled (deals are 10 turns min.) -- Roman |

There are plenty of cases where you may want to trade away your last resource. Just some of the possibilities from my experience:
1) Early in the game, you have lots of health or lots of happiness reosurces, but few of the other. Trading can help belanace this. 2) If you are going for a cultural victory and have the culture slider over 70%, you might as well trade all your happiness reosurces for anything that generates health. With theaters, your cities will have something like 35 or more happy faces anyway. 3) You must have a strategic resource, and trading away your last of something else is the only way to get it. An example of this occurred in my current game. I didn't have horses, so I either had to give up 3 resources (2 of which I only have 1 of) to be able to build Cossacks, or I had to live with musketman for the rest of the game. Easy choice since I can fight off late game tanks with enough cossacks, but I wouldn't want to try it with muskets. |

Be careful when an AI offers a resource trade. They're likely to trade a surplus resource for one that you only have one of. For example, if they have 3 Ivory spaces and you have 1 Silk, they'll offer a trade of Ivory for Silk. They bascially gain your Silk for free, because they already have Ivory, and you're still left with a single luxury. It's easy to accept such a trade without thinking about it.

Either for Multiplayer or Single, if you want to appease an antsy enemy, help an ally or befriend someone, you can trade away 'obsolete' resources (albeit only temporarily) like horses (if you have War Elephants but not Knights or Cavalry) or Copper - if you have no need of the Wonder hurrying benefit - and you have Iron. Keeps someone dependant on you for their well-being and keeping their military alive, but you can revoke it if they get on your bad side.

There's another situation where the AI will ask for your last resource. In a recent game as soon as I discovered astronomy (allows ocean trade) I got dialed up by Bismarck wanting my gold for his furs. That was fine since I had 2 gold anyway, I accepted. But then Egypt called up immediately after (in the same turn) asking for my gold also. The game must have queued her up to talk to me when I had the extra one and it doesn't get dequeue'd after I made the first trade.
So yeah, be careful with accepting trades offered by the AI. |
