Some Civ4-Noob Questions
Ok so ive downloaded some graphics mods for Civ 4 cos they were nice - like flags and some leaderheads.
I followed the instructions in the readme files (extracted files into the CustomAssets folder) but they still dont come up in the game. So my question; what files to I have to mod to get the leaderheads and new flag/border graphics to come up in game? And what exactly do I do?

Make sure they are named exactly as the original files.

If they are placed in the right folders in custom assets they should automaticaly load if there is a file just like it in the original assets folder

Try checking to be sure you don't overwrite stuff in your custom folder.
I've noticed similar problem where I tried to use BadRonalds flags and putting in the Canadian Civ. It's like one was overwriting the other. I'm going to try a third go where instead of 'extracting' in my custom assets folder I'll copy file by file to be sure the flags don't get overwritten this time. Argh. Feel your pain mate. |

Make sure the directories are correct. Sometimes people pack the files into a zip, without sticking them into maps (like 'art' or 'xml').
Or, it could be the opposite. They did pack everything, but you extracted in the wrong place. For example, some people put a 'CustomAssets' map in the zipfile. Then if you extract it into your own CustomAsstets-folder, you get this; ..CustomAssets/CustomAssets/art(or xml)/ Get my meaning? Just double-check where you extract them. |

Also you might have to clear your civ 4 cache. It's in %appdata%\my games\civilization 4\cache. civilization 4 might be something diffrent if you installed it somewhere other than the default directory.

Well someone suggested in another thread that you can copy it directly into the Assets folder.
Because I had checked that the files and such like were named correctly, and put in the right place they were. So I did so and it still doesnt work. The person suggested unpacking the art.fpk file (backing up) and then over writing - but I dont know how to unpack the fpk file as the normal unpakcing programs like zip n rar dnot work.

Put them in the Mods folder. You DO NOT want to to put them in the assets folder unless you want them to be permanent (this is assuming that you've already unpacked the art0.fpk, but I know that isn't the case). Anyways, to find the utility to unpack the fpk's, you can go here. It takes a LONG time, so don't think that your computer has frozen up when running it. After finishing that, you will need to move the art0.fpk out of the assets folder.
However, you don't need to unpack art0.fpk, it's just what all the cool civvers are doing .

I'm just saying what's worked for people who have tried my mod. However, I can't give you exact directions at the moment as I don't have civ working myself. I'm like the kid who got an expensive present who choses to play with the box instead of the present. Maybe I can be more helpful next week.
So, at the moment, I might not be the person to ask on this. I'm only working on what I think is going on, which is mostly right at the moment. What I've suggested should make it so that you can load them as mods, but I don't know exactly how to do that (I've never loaded the game, you see). It must be pretty simple to find out how to, as I haven't had any confused posts on my mod. So in the Mods folder, I've created a folder, named for the mod that I'd like to load. In this folder, I make an assets folder and an ini file (named the same as the folder) with the following: [CONFIG] ; This mod is only for single player games SinglePlayerOnly = 1 ; Set to 1 to disallow use of WorldBuilder scenarios IgnoreWorldBuilderScenarios = 0 ; Allow public maps to be used with this mod AllowPublicMaps = 1 ; Mod Image file ImageFile = 0 ; Name of Mod Name = Blah ; Description of Mod Description = Blah Now, unzip the contents of the zip files with WinZip or whatever and extract them into this assets folder (The one created. Also, dont do it by file. Use the trusty Extract feature, because they've probably got them sorted to their proper folders already). Then go to the assets folder. If you see a folder called mods, double click on that and drag it's contents to the mod folder past the main Civ4 directory. If you see the mod's name as a directory, along with an ini file, just drop those in the mod directory in the main civ4 folder. If you see assets, just double click it and drag the contents back one folder, then go back and get rid of that assets folder. If you see directories like Art, XML, Sounds or Python, you should be just fine. Hope I haven't lost you with this. Anyways, at the moment, this is the best help that I can give. If I lost you, I might have to use screenshots to explain what I mean. |
