How to bombard you enemy with a catapult 20 squares away: it's very simple.

I'm not sure if this little trick is known yet, but anyways, i decided to mention it in this thread. Bombarding your enemies with any unit with artillery capabilities can be done from <gasp> any distance you like. I discovered that when holding the 'b' key (b for bombard) the targeting reticle symbol would come up even beyond the unit's range of fire. With experimentation, i unleashed the fact that it would fire anywhere you would want it to as long as you held the b button pressed down. Wow.

FaCts: With this new concept figured out, i decided to learn more about it. I came up with a conclusion that attacking cities with an artillery unit which are farther than the units range is useless. That is because when bombarding any hostile unit out of the artillery's range, the unit will not suffer any damage. So attacking cities will not help very much. Personally, I use this trick to destroy improvements such as roads, railways, irrigation and mines. What's also funny is that you can cut off the enemy's roads leading to natural resources or their colonies.

UniTs that can apply this function:
-Catapults
-Cannon
-Artillery
<in other words, all artillery type units>
-Frigate
-Destroyer
-Ironclad
-Battleships
<in other words, most aggresive naval units>
-Bombers
-Fighters
<in other words, all airborne units>

Remember, all you gotta do is hold the 'b' key when it is the turn of one of these units, and ya can cause havoc towards an enemy half a world away.

hahahahahahaha

WTF? He's right. I just took out a roaded mine from about 10 squares away with a frigate! Man is that messed up or what!

ANOTHER bug???

It's one thing to cheat a little; the AI does it regularly. But let's not make a mockery of the game.

BTW, what the **** is with Cruise Missiles having a 2 square range?!?!

It should. ICBM is short for Inter Continental Ballistic Missile.

bombardment ?

hey,

I suspect that i have a pretty simple question, but here goes: I have been having no luck getting my cannons or artillary, boats, planes, missles etc... to attack cities or roads or mines or any other type of improvement. Everytime I move one of these units to the target I want destroyed I get a message that "only ground units can attack land targets" (or something along those lines). Is it just a simple matter of hitting 'b' on my keyboard and directing the bombardment from afar or is there a glitch in my game? Would certainly appreciate an answer. thanks.

manjuro,

artillery units such as catapult, cannon, radar artillery, etc. can only bombard; they cannot attack. So yes, you must either press 'b' or the bombard button while using one of these units. Then a grid comes up where you can select a target.

Same goes for ships when you want them to attack a land based target, you have to use the bombard function. Ships can bombard or attack other ships as you wish, but the only way to destroy another ship is to attack it.

I'm pretty sure you can't move planes without using one of the mission buttons though...

Yes, striking "b" will show available targets around the unit. But you cannot stand on the square you want to hit. However, you can pillage a square you're standing on with a military unit.

When new to the game, I prefered using the buttons at the bottom of the screen instead of the keyboard, 'cause then I could see the available actions.

I've just posted a news about this bug so it gets the attention it deserves. Has any of you emailed Firaxis about this bug?

Just a bit of an update... I played around a bit with this bug, and it seems (at least with the Men 'o War that I was using) that bombardment is 100% successful when used to destroy enemy improvements.

oh well, realising this is a bug explains how the ai was using ironclads to blow up my roads from 2 squares away when i thought the range of ironclads was only one, at the time i just thought i was confused bout the stats

still, at least it gives us a reason to build artillery in the first place, i guess most people just go for fast attack units so this bug ain't cropped up till now (or rather ain't been noticed)

thx for pointing this out, rest assured i will exploit this knowledge to cheat like hell and send all there cities into civil unrest and cut them from resources, muhhahahahaha.....

Dionysus says it also works for airlifting ('T').

I wonder if it also works for paradropping.

I thought reconmissions were supposed to get your plane to any city on the map, no matter the distance.

This fact was know by many since the first week this great game was to be bought. It brought many of us a surprise. The patch (1.16f) didnīt fix this, so i donīt think of it as a bug.
