Man-o-Wars and silver
This is my first topic here so I hope that the following subjects hasnt been all to frequently discussed.
Ive always been curious why they never made the man-o-war vessel available before the independence war. Man-o-wars appeared during several colonial wars in american waters and it would certainly boost the gameplay to have a few of them around since frigates really sucks and loses 9 out of ten engagements with those darn corsairs (at least when defending). My second issue is the price of silver. It usually drops to 1/2 gold even before 1600, sometimes earlier. As far Im concerned the spanish silver fleets where a prized target for pirates during several hundred years and the backbone of the Spanish colonial economy. The only possitive effect, though unhistorical, of the quickly deteriorating silverprices is that you can buy some hundred tons of it in europe cheaply and, with Jan de Witt, turn it into a good amount of cash selling it to foreign colonies. Comments? /Fredrik |

If I see silver deposit, then I settle a colony next to it, but I only do that if it's in the beginning, i.e. earlier than 1450. Otherwise it's useless exploiting silver since the unstability of the european market (exception for the Dutch, I admit). So generally I make lot of money investing in an expert silver miner and get cargos of 100 silver ASAP then sell them. When the game advances, then I switch my production to rhum. That's a good investment since it's always sold at a good price. Same for weapons.
Otherwise, in the starting I rarely depend on my colony productions. I generally use a veteran scout and enter the rumors squares. The 2 best things I always get are: _ 7 cities of Gold (lots of money). Even more than indian treasures) _ Fountain of Youth (when I need quick immigration). |

I never have problems with silver, that's because I play the Dutch I guess.
I'm somewhere in 1630 or something and silver is still 19/20.

I concur that the drastic drop in silver prices is not too realistic, but in gameplay terms, it does even it up for those nations who do not have access to the silver of the Incas (and the Aztecs, to a lesser extent)
The man o war should be available earlier, for an exorbitant price.

It's realistic...
After the spanish conquered the aztecs and incas, they found great deposits of silver and gold in the Andes mountains... They colonized quickly and explored huge quantities of silver, that made the prices in Europe low...

yes the spanish caused the 'Price Revolution' due to them importing 16000 tons of silver and hmmmm 200 tons of gold. Just went over the spanish and early colonial period in US History before 1877

Hmmm...I wonder what the price of furs was historically...it always seems to be at 1/2 when I play.

silver at 1 1600
finished the game in 1617 . the price of silver drop to 1 befor 1600 .
on the economic report was say that I sold 1200 ton and got 16 000 gold . do this the hall amount I sold ? or the silver I bought from the incas is counted twice ! so maybe I sold 1600 ton and bought 400 from the incas ?
