Laptop hangs when starting new single game

Hi

When I run CIV4, it works in scenario and tutorial plays. Problem arises when I start a new single game. It loads ok and the voice starts taking about world history and slide show continues. When I click on 'play game' button, background goes black and there is a small log text box and a face icon hanging on one of the edge of the screen. Voice keeps going on and mouse cursor is there. After a few moment computer just freezes. Mouse pointer and voice disappears. I have to cold restart the laptop. I have installed latest game patch. It is a bought legal copy. It is CD-Rom version.

It works now, i moved to Omega Drivers for ATI.

I tried it earlier too but your reply inspired me to try that again. Only this time I removed all components of ATI software before installing those third party driver.

Thank you sgarg. I was having exactly the same problem with the same graphics card. Downloaded and installed the newest Omega driver and it works! Ahh that's gotten me really excited now.

I'm having the exact same problem except my laptop has a nVidia graphics card. The game works well in multiplayer mode.

They also have drivers for nVidia. Just check which version is compatile with your laptop. For example, fATI driver's current version is 5.11 but latest driver compatible with my laptop, Compaq Presario x1220, is v5.6

Hey sgarg. I have a similar hardware setup:
p4 1.5ghz centrino
ATI 9200 64mb

But installing the omega drivers didn't work for me i think it's because of my widescreen laptop (from HP). Is yours widescreen as well? just checking.

I have also an hp laptop with widescreen. The omega drivers did not work at all with my computer. And no updated drivers from hp available...

It would be very valuable to now if there is anyone with an hp widscreen laptop who have hade the problem and solved it or maybe does not have the problem at all.

I have:
1,6 Ghz intel centrino
512 Mb ram
ati mobility radeon 9200, 64 Mb

I have widescreen laptop as well. The newer version of omega drivers dont work for me. v5.6 works for me. There are two ways to find out latest compatible drivers:- 1. hit and trial and 2. look for forums for your laptop model. I have Compaq x1000 and www.x1000forums.com covers x1000, nx7000 and zt3000 notebooks

I checked the forums and my nx7010 works with the catalyst 5.6 (omega 2642). I installed and now I am able to start games! Every time! I haven't played for any long time yet, but hopfully the omega drivers does not cause any other problems...

I was getting the same problem as sgarg, things working fine at basic graphics levels and smaller maps, but with anything more challenging the same black screen and face icon on starting a new game. Newest omega drivers completely screwed up my display, but in the end older omega version 2.6.42 seems to have sorted the problems, been playing on a huge map flawlessly.

like stated above, i play only for few turns before my screen goes black. i played civ4, then i installed patches and finally installed warlord expansion but still no change happens. My laptop still freeze after few turns.

i use driver supplied by the manufacturer, then i installed omega with latest version (3.8.273), reinstalled omega 2 times but still no change whatsoever..

the problem, which i read from event viewer, is caused by driver ati2dvag got stuck in infinite loop. few minutes later, the screen goes black with the message
"Error code 000000ea, parameter1 86dfa3a8, parameter2 8580f178, parameter3 857dadb0, parameter4 00000001." appeared on event viewer.

fyi, my laptop is acer 5560, gcard: ati radeon mobility x1600 (128mb vram), 1 GB RAM, cpu intel core duo 1.68 GHz. My CPU temp goes up to about 70 deg celcius when playing , according to reading from everest.

i tried so many ways and methods but still it persists when playing single game . i almost goes mad as i really want to play civ4... help me!!
