whaaat? very confused!

so i have just tried to install my new civilization 4 on my newly xp'd computer and it's coming up with the most annoying error before i've even got into the installation.

i put the cd in, it comes up with the read me, install & exit screen.
i click install, it loads the installshield, then i get this:

An internal read error has occured on C:\Program Files\Common Files\ADAPTEC\ECDCUNIN\SETUP.INS. Unable to load installation instructions.

Error 703.

and then it shuts all civ4 stuff down.

i have uninstalled all adaptec parts on my system as they were not compliant with XP, which makes this even more confusing!

WHAT DO I DO? even my techy dad who put the xp on for me was stumped.

I googled a bit, I guess you did not succeed in uninstalling the adaptec software and it still causes trouble. What I would try:

1. check if there's still some component of the adaptec software that you can uninstall

2. rename the directory "adaptec" to e.g. "adaptec.old". Possibly reboot and see if there's a problem. Perhaps this will not be possible "because files are in use", try to rename it in safe mode.

3. You may want to boot into Safe Mode and remove the CD's and reboot and let it reinstall the correct driver.
