Wireless signal strength issue

I've got a problem with a wireless network.

My ex-girlfriend currently has a wireless network running in her house. the desktop pc is attached to a wireless router and her laptop upstairs uses that to access the net. This was fine for several months but now there seems to be a problem and she asked for my help.

I reinstalled the router thinking that was the problem but to no avail. the Desktop PC knows the router is there and it says the router is working fine. The laptop seems to be working perfectly and even can even find the wireless network, it also says the signal strength is excellent.

However, the desktop PC says that there is little or no signal strength so as a result my ex is unable to access the net across the network.

I think it may have something to do with IP addresses but I've no idea. Would it be easier if she used the router for both the wireless network AND accessing the net (at present she has a router for the network and an ADSL modem, but I think she can use the router for both)

let me see if I understood this correct. the desktop is attached to the ADSL-modem and thus gets internet. in addition to the modem there's a wireless router attached to your pc that let's the laptop connect to it and thus via internet-connection sharing let't it connect to the net? so you have to have the desktop running to get the notebook to connect to the internet, right?
or did I get it the wrong way around?

if the wireless router really can handle the ADSL-Line, I'd say get rid of the ADSL-modem, and let the router access the I-net directly, just one component less that can fail.

the signal strength should have nothing to do with IP adresses, as you only get the IP-Adress after you connected to the network. your IP Adress has no influence on your signal strength.

no thats correct. in order for the laptop to connect to the net, the desktop must first be connected to the net

Sounds odd.

I wouldn't think ADSL would work that much different from my cable internet. I have the cable connect to the modem, which connects to my router, and that connects all the computers and (stand-alone) printers in my house.

I recommend that you hook up the modem to the router and all of your machines to the router as well.

Anyone here know if setting up a Mac and PC to the same wireless router is likely to cause any issues?

I doubt there would be any issues.
