Sorry this may have already been mentioned, but in my inexperienced state cant find any offerings.

I love the begining of the game during the exploration stage, and was thinking about ways of getting more of this later in the game.

One idea I had was to have a deep sea exploration vessel! This could maybe be used to search out previously destroyed ships (maybe to gain a monetary or tech benifit), or could discover lost anchient cities. This could maybe be available after the discovery of a new tech - maybe sonar (which could also be fitted to other sea vessels, ie: to see subs, or increase food from fish!).

Many other ideas - lets see what people think of this first!

"Lost Ancient Cities"? I feel kinda bad for being the guy to break this to you, but there is no Atlantis underwater. That was a cover-up: It really moved to Missouri and lived quite comfortably for some time before retiring from the whole "lost city" gig.

Now, for your first suggestion, finding sunken vessels and recovering gold from them wouldn't be a bad suggestion, but I can't really see how it could be implemented properly. Besides, most of such expeditions are too minor to be included in the "big picture" of Civ.

try to play with a "Terra" map type.
You're going to have two phases of exploration:
1st your continent (shared with mostly everybody else)
2nd the "new world" after you discover astronomy.
