Civ4 on the G4
As soon as someone - anyone! - has a copy of Civ4 could they please report if
(a) it installs on a G4 machine, and (b) what it plays like on that machine. Please give machine specs as well. Thanks.

I have a G4 that's below the min. specs (1 GHz/1.12 GBytes/32MByte GeForce 4MX) and I have Civ4 on order from MacGold.
I don't expect to be able to play it until I get a new Mac, probably later this year when the Conroe Macs ship. But I want to investigate things like mod creation and installation, file structures, etc., and to see what all the fuss is about. Of course, I'll report back on what works and what doesn't, but UK delivery won't be for a couple more weeks yet.

There are two families of Mac that are still G5-only - the towers and the XServes. The current Intel Macs all use 32 bit CPUs, but Intel are about to release their 64 bit chips.
When Apple converts the towers to Intel it is anticipated that they will use the Intel Core 2 Duo chips, codenamed Conroe. Since my existing tower has survived and upgraded so successfully since 1999, I want my next Mac to be a tower too, and I want it to be an Intel-based system, of course. So I'm waiting for the 'Conroe' Macs to be released, probably at the Apple WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference) in August.

Personally, I wouldn't play it on a G4 unless it was somewhat close to the minimum G5 requirements. I plan on playing it on my 1.67 GHz Powerbook, which is below spec, but should still be able to handle it. |

As others have pointed out, the word is that Civ IV won't refuse to play on a G4 by any means. Just a matter of how well it plays. I've got a Digital Audio G4 with a dual 1.6ghz upgrade in it that I'm definitely going to give a shot with Civ IV just to see how it runs. Main play will be on my G5.

I have a G4 dual 1.3 with a Radeon 9800 pro 256MB vram and 1.12 GB system ram.
It is slow but playable. Espescially on the smaller maps. I have played on small, tiny and dual. I doubt that it will be playable on larger maps. I also have the sound issues that everyone else has. It has not crashed on me yet. |
