I read on apolyton that Mike Breitkreutz from Firaxis said that the largest civ 3 map allowed is at least 6X larger than the largest civ 2 map(the original civ 2 i think). That is to say 10 000 X 6=60 000
![]() In civ2 it was 100X100 but i think in civ3 it'll be 250X250(62 500). In civ 2,a tile of a 100X100 tiles map represented 400km(267 miles). In civ 3,a tile of a 250X250 tiles map will represent 160km(106 miles). ![]() I think it's good coz it will be more realistic;conquest will be more difficult and u'll be able to build a lot of cities. Civilization will definitely not be a war-like game. Firaxis. |

A map that gargantuan with no more than seven civilizations; truly makes you contemplate why at least ten aren't allowed with multiple colors designated to each. Then again, it could be a "good thing"; when I play with six opponents on the "large" Civ II map, my computer's already-poor performance is degraded enough.
The solution: There should be an "ASCII Mode" (or a “CGA Mode”) for users like myself who possess machines unable to handle the "intense" graphics ... ![]() |

BTW,i think it's good that firaxis puts between 7 n 9 max because if they would put more, science would run too fast coz of exchanges,u could pass through embargos coz of ur allies who have whatever u want, the one who would spread the fastest would have the advantage coz of the culture pts n on these gigantic maps u have to build lots of cities to meet someone which is more realistic...most countries built their territory;they didn't invade it. |

I am really interested in having larger map sizes, especially to make the world map more realistic. I find your post confusing, but if the maps are larger that will be great.

Wow. That's going to be quite interesting to play on a monster size map like that. Of course, there is no word from Firaxis on this yet. I won't believe it untill they say so.

In which case, maybe the speed of tech research shld be slowed down. And maybe squeeze in more turns per the entire game? With such a large map, I'll definitely want more turns to spread my civ around (by swords if necessary).
BTW, I think most countries are built on conquests rather than being 'built'. Like the Anglo-Saxons who invaded England fr Germany and the Americans who invaded all the way across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Even the fairly pure Japanese orignally came from Korea and Manchuria and drove the Ainu tribes northwards. |

The huge map sounds great but have they gotten rid of the max city limit?

These limits like citylimit and maximum of 10.000 tiles existed because the orignally civ2 should run on a 486 DX with 33mhz with 8mb ram and windows 3.1!!!!!!!!

I havent heard firaxis officially say what the max number of civs on any given game would be i think the max number might be more than seven i think 8,9 or even ten wouldnt be out of the question, i would guess 8 civs.

When you consider the bigger maps, it might be good to keep in mind the more continental feel Firaxis is going for with Civ III. Before you had water as a somewhat natural barrier between many civs, but if the world consists of only a few large land masses, its going to be easier to meet people before going to the trouble of building boats and having to follow the coastline like a scared kid.
Also, it seems that the Civ III team is trying to emphasize the cultural aspects of the game, and giving people time to build up some high culture cities means it will be harder for an aggressive civ to take and hold their territory without building some high culture cities nearby. It seems like many aspects of the game are pushing it more towards Civ building, rather than Civ butchering. (no more Fundamentalism! )Personally, I like the idea of a huge map with seven to ten civs on it, but I'm a nice, peaceful guy. ![]() NiceGuy |
