Mud Golems

Do mud golems have any advantage over regular workers? Obviously, they have the golem promotion, but I don’t see any use for it since they don’t have any strength to loose. On top of that they cost more shields than regular golems making them strictly worse.

They work faster than regular workers. Also, they don't take food to produce so, theoretically, you could start building it as the first unit in your city, without hindering the initial growth thereof.

What a Worker unit builds in 6 turns, a Mud Golom builds in 4.

My son, the stableboy, was supposed to bring them to you when he went in to work. I guess he forgot when I got killed.

If you build a Blasting Workshop, mud golems built there gain the Fire2 and Sorcery promotions, letting them cast fireball.

It's a waste of resources, though. There's no point in having your workers able to create 3 strength fireballs by that point - any attackers will be at least equal to 3 strength and probably much stronger, so you still have to escort the workers.

Str 6 fireballs still do about squat at the point you get Blasting Workshops. Most enemies will be tier 3, so strength 7, with promotions.

but the fireballs are free and the worker isn't used up-
you can spam fireballs repeatedly as neccessary, maybe even while they work
if you spam the mithril golem with enough fireballs, it will die

True, however the resources you pumped into producing your mud golem army could have been equally spent on other things that would have made your empire far better.

I would like to see mud golems have the ability to work in conditions that normal workers cannot. Or have them be able to build improvements that normal workers cannot. Or give them the unique ability to upgrade into other forms of golems? That'd be cool.

I like them as they are: workers with faster work-rates (as they don't need rest).

Fireballs are useful even in the later stages of the game, in my opinion. Any unit can have an unlucky battle and lose a portion of its hit points to even a str 3 fireball (not to mention the collatoral damage). And that's what they are for - softening up the enemy. Of course, I doubt I'll ever concentrate on making a mud golem army because of this.

you don't need to make a mud golem army, it's just extra encouragement to build all golems in a city with a blasting furnace after you have the tech
who can complain about free str 6 fireballs(with a high level barnaxus-best if you can cast dance of blades too) that can change the course of a battle...

Moreover, you're likely to have mud golems pretty much everywhere in your empire by the time you get the tech... if an ennemy ever gets in range, there's no reason you'd want to skip an occasion to send him a good ol' fireblast before sending the usual grunts to pick them up. You could even consider the initial fireball pretty much like a very physical First Strike ability.

The problem is, you have to build them in the city with the Blasting Workshop, so any Mud Golem you built before won't have it. Still, if you are going to build more, you might as well build them there...

The Blasting Workshop gives the fireball to ALL golems built in the city, so it's a nice additional ability, but it is true that by the time you get it, it is not a very powerful ability. It does come in handy sometimes (like for sinking enemy ships that came too close to your coast )

Golems casting fireballs come handy when otherwise equal stacks clash. Because of collateral damage you have a great advantage. I wonder which promotion works against golems, shock?
