Cool OK, now I'm stumped.

Just bought this game ten days ago. Installation for the game was problem free. I downloaded the 1.17f patch, and installed with no problems. I really liked the Marla Singer map, so I decided to play it. I found out that the starting locations were wrong (Egyptian starting in Japan?? ) so I browsed here and found an excellent save game editor to where I could correct the start locations, and found the Powerbar trainer. I did the modifications, and started playing. After a while, I get the "Invalid Page Fault- Civilization3.exe at 177"....etc... I figured it was just a random occurance, so I played some more. Now this error occurs more and more frequently!! Now its at the point where I play for a minute and I get the error!! I figured I was getting these errors from the powerbar trainer so I tried to play the game without it, and no luck. I then reinstall the game and the patch and NOW I can't even play the damn game!! I double-click on my desktop icon to start the game, then I get a one second flash of the very first title screen and then I get nothing. I did some more browsing here and the infogames site, did every possible solution (movie deletion, fonts, etc...) and I still get NOTHING. I'm stumped. Do I need the safedisc patch? I filled out the infogames e-mail form and hope to hear from them soon. I was wondering if there was any workaround to this problem? This is really bunching my panties.

I forgot my system:

1.4g amd athlon
geforce3 ti 200 vid card
256ddr ram
turtle beach santa cruz sound card
kds vs-70 17" monitor
win98 se
all drivers and directx are current

I haven't heard of this specific problem before, but I know there are a lot of weird problems with this game. Sometimes when people get errors in the game they can fix it with a simple change to some of their preferences, like disabling the Civil Disorder pop-up, while others with the same error can't get rid of it no matter what they do.

I was getting errors in the game that prevented me from playing it for months. Then I reinstalled it in a different directory (that's what tech support said to do) and started getting errors whenever I'd try to load a save. Then tech support ran out of ideas, so I decided to reinstall the game again back to the original place I had put it. Now it works fine.

The only advice I can give is to try uninstalling it completely, deleting any files that may remain, and then install it again along with the latest patch. Maybe it will work then, but maybe not. Nothing seems to be too certain with getting this game to work.

Ok, I got the safedisk patch and installed it. Well, the game works for a short time (1775BC) before I get an illegal operation error:

CIVILIZATION3 caused an invalid page fault in
module CIVILIZATION3.EXE at 017f:00403046.

This is a new one to me. I ran Dr. Watson on this and it suggested a memory error. I changed my virtual memory settings to manual, disabled all my background applications except for explorer and systray, and still no dice. Any suggestions anyone?

BTW, the safedisk patch screws up a lot of text in the game which also bunches my shorts!! :aargh3: :die!: [phaser]

make sure you close all other programs (ctrl+alt+del) before starting up civ3.

Yeah, I tried EVERYTHING... closing all programs, reinstalling in safe mode, defraging in safemode then reinstalling, updated all drivers, etc...

Nothing works.

I put the disk waaaaay in the back of my CD organizer so it don't remind me of the 40 bucks I wasted. Maybe someday there'll be a new patch that might fix some of these issues; I know I can't be the only one having them.

hmmm...I remember getting those errors. I think I fixed it with just ctrl+alt+delling everything that was open.
