bonus? have i lost track of the stories?

As i see it, Thlalyi and Luckymoose have written stories since last update, and ill add bonuses with the stats in this coming update.

I am returning to take Almoth.

Shortest retirement ever.

Sorry I couldn’t make this as ‘epic’ as some people wanted... Mistakes and missed things are likely :(

380-395 AD
Almost all the world is at war. Great empires crash into each other, but none of them are giving way. It seems many years of strife lie ahead. Ass the death toll rises, science and trade still find ways to flourish in a few isolated corners of the world.

Global Events:

The Pangari Wars

Almost everyone in Panga was expecting the veteran loyalist forces to return from the new world, and then defeat the republicans with a few quick battles, before the Taej or anyone else became involved. They weren’t expecting their Emperor, Panago-He, to suddenly abdicate and surrender all of Panga to the new republic. But that is what happened nonetheless (whether Panago-He was forced into this or not, no-one can know for sure).

The republicans moved quickly to establish control over the north of Panga, spreading propaganda everywhere… Civil war had been avoided, and now Panga could unite to reclaim its former glory, starting with the conquest of Quipeng. The people were left with a choice – support the republic, or support the total defeat of the country.

There were still many opponents of the republic, especially among the loyal troops in the new world. But without the Emperor, there was nobody left for them to rally around.

…

The Republic mobilised its forces to continue the invasion of Quipeng. Their troops were enthusiastic, but inexperienced. There was no overall plan for the war, and all decisions were left to the inexperienced republican generals. Things did not go well to begin with…

At the city of Quinyan, the Pangans faced a Taej army that outnumbered them two to one. Panga’s heavy infantry fell victim to mass formations of Taej bowmen. The Taej also unleashed new heavy gunpowder rockets, which exploded in mid air, raining metal shards onto the enemy below. The Pangans were routed, and many were cut down by large numbers of Taej cavalry as they fled.

The Pangans were forced to retreat from Quipeng, but they vowed to return. The cities of the republic were fortified against attack (there were only a few half-hearted probes by Taej forces), while inventors and engineers were called in to work for the army. The republic tried to gather support from Pangans living abroad.

Many more troops were recruited. A handful of experienced commanders were recalled from the new world in order to train them. But almost all of the veteran troops were still kept overseas, fighting against Hocatelco (see below). It would be a while before the Pangan army in asia could match the Taej’s level of experience (from their wars against the Taroists and other rebels).

Most of Panga’s navy was recalled to asia, however…

…

The Pangans eventually attacked again, this time making the most of their naval advantage, in terms of both numbers and experience. The Taej navy (together with that of their Quipeng and Yutanese vassals) was defeated in several battles on the chilly southern seas. The Pangans overran the island of Hiunga, and used it as a base for raiding all along the southern coasts of the Taej Empire - from Tosunga to the Ongan territories.

Almost everywhere the Pangans went along the south coast, there were some ethnic Pangans or other minorities who were willing to provide some assistance.

The vastness of the Taej Empire was intimidating in itself. But Pangari’s soldiers were driven by republican propaganda, ‘an epic battle to regain the lands of our forefathers’.

The Taej struggled to catch up with the Pangans. The ‘military districts’ weren’t equipped to defend against sudden large-scale invasions by sea. Though they still had a much bigger army overall, they rarely had enough force in the right places. They also had a few remaining peasant revolts to deal with.

Panga avoided any more big battles like Quinyan (though countless smaller battles were fought) and managed to capture several coastal cities with daring assaults (including the huge eastern city of Tanzu, which was heavily damaged). The Pangans had their own basic cannons and rockets by this time.

Pangari raiders reached as far inland as the cities of Iri Heju and Zanung. The Pangan navy fought its way up the eastern end of the Taejon river as far as Bingol. The western islands of Yutan were invaded too

…

While the Taej were distracted in the east, another attempt was made to invade Quipeng. The Pangans used their latest inventions here - Large hot air balloons were used at platforms for catapulting gunpowder grenades on the enemy. They also had a steam-driven, enclosed, mobile, armoured carriage, known simply as the ‘Pangan Engine’. It ran on wheels, and had enough space inside for several crossbowmen or hand-cannoners. Because it didn’t rely on vulnerable horses, there seemed no way of stopping it. The sights and sounds of the ‘Engine’ were very unnerving for the Taej and Quipeng troops as it advanced relentlessly towards them, throwing out deadly projectiles and clouds of steam (except for the occasions when it suddenly broke down).

The Pangan inventors had envisioned much bigger machines, running on tracks, and carrying their own cannon artillery. But the technology and industry of Pangari just wasn’t enough to make this a reality. Even the ‘Pangan Engine’ was rarely used in combat - it was so difficult to get it to the battlefield that it could only really be used in sieges. And even then, it could only run on flat ground.

Anyway, even if the inventions didn’t really turn the tide of the war in Pangari’s favour (or make up for the disadvantage in manpower), they did help to inspire confidence in the Pangan soldiers. But the new republic has proved incapable of waging the epic war that its ambitious leaders had wanted (especially as one foot remained in the new continent). Taej’s economy and manpower have not been seriously damaged, and Pangari is now the one who seems overstretched.

It is all a far cry from the peace and stability during the celebrations at Tianzou. War clouds now hang over the great palace, and
Asia’s great minds seem focused on death and destruction. Who knows if the spirit of the ‘enlightenment’ will ever reappear?

War in the south of the new continent

The Taej-Pangari war spread thousands of miles of in the west. After news of Emperor Panago-He’s abdication reached New Panga, a small force of Pangan adventurers set out to attack to the Taej’s fledgling colony of Zhizou in the south. Resistance was surprisingly strong, and the Pangans had to retreat.

Zhizhou was left too weak to resist becoming a protectorate of the emerging’ Chimuko Empire’, as it launched a major campaign of conquest in the south. It is said that the Taej colonists were treated with great respect by the Chimuko emperor, and some became trusted advisors in his court. It was also said that the emperor was greatly interested in Taoism.

Some Taroists had been exiled to Zhizhou. It is rumoured that their ideas have taken hold among the people in the south of the Chimuko Empire.

Anyway, most of the empire now practised Orhadism, which had spread from New Panga. Orhadist monks from Ormash were also gaining an influence here (see Ormash).

Thousands of Pangan soldiers kept up the fight against Hocatelco. They fought all the way along the southern end of the central straights, eventually capturing the city of Tanilkat. The island of Tahanku was also invaded. There wasn’t much resistance - Hocatelco made little attempt to rebuilt its navy, and basically abandoned its empire south of the straights. But Tecochen was kept well guarded.

The Pangans had now reached the ‘eastern’ ocean (as it was known to the Umidians and europeans). The straights were mostly safe for merchant ships. In the midst of all the ongoing wars, trade between Panga and europe was actually increased.

Back on land, the Pangans had helped stir up native peoples against Hocatelco’s empire in the south. They had been useful allies in that war, but they now formed their own strong tribal coalition known as the ‘Zocon’, based in the mountains west of Catochen.

The East Ocean War

The Thulean-Umidian war spread even further, and got even more complicated. Both sides were rushing to mobilise more resources. Umidia gained ships and funding from its trader’s guild (see Umidia). Things were more extreme on the Thulean side (see Thulean League). Anti-Umidian feeling was stirred up throughout the League. Far from caving in, their people were eager to get revenge and restore their pride.

After the battle at Kemperof (see last update), the surviving ships from the Thulean’s ocean fleet were divided up and sent on raiding duty. Privateers from Yihamcoross and Transnoagar joined in the action. Umidia still had a big advantage in naval power on the ocean, but it now faced the same basic problem that the Thuleans had faced – namely the defence and supply of many different islands, scattered across vast stretches of ocean.

At the same time, the Thuleans gathered their huge european fleet (mainly made up of short-range galleys) near Ys, and sailed south to the island of Astura, to disrupt Umidian shipping. The Umidians gathered as many ships as they could to defend the straights of Oriant. The Thuleans wanted to avoid a head-on battle, but were eventually forced to fight in the ‘Battle of Pelanto bay’.

This was a bloodbath; hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of men were killed on both sides. The Thulean tactic of overwhelming numbers didn’t quite work out. Umidia’s weaker galleys and caravels were overrun, but a few well-armed Galleons were able to hold the centre of the battle line - repelling many boarding attempts in the process, and sinking many galleys using their cannons at close range. The Thuleans were beaten back, and Astura came fully under Umidian control.

For the next few years, the Thuleans sent scattered raids all across the east ocean, crossing many thousands of miles - from Astura and the straights of Oriant, to the far-flung outposts of Kemperof and Taphi. Umidian garrisons often found themselves threatened from both land and sea, as they kept fighting against all kinds of rebel factions, especially on the largest island of Ember. Some garrisons came close to being overwhelmed.

Most of Umidia’s ocean fleet was divided between trying to catch the raiders, putting down uprisings, and keeping the various island garrisons supplied. A smaller portion of Umidia’s fleet was gathered for a cautious attack on Mahutan island - the Thulean garrison couldn’t do anything to prevent a blockade, but they were determined to hold out in order to protect their remaining trade routes (see Thulean League). By now they had built several strong fortifications, manned by large garrisons; some were even armed with captured Umidian cannons, or basic Thulean copies (which were probably just as dangerous to their own crews).

The fighting was desperate, but progress was being made. The Great Chief of the Hanawauk even sent some help (see below). But more troops and supplies were continually being drawn in, and the Umidian commanders were worried about overstretching their forces. They eventually decided to withdraw, leaving half the island pillaged and in ruins.

Elsewhere, the native kingdom of Ohukal pushed back the over-extended Yihamco raiders. Ohukal’s king converted to the Sarukian (Mahal) version of Theosim. This reduced Umidia’s influence a little, but also had the effect of calming the fighting between Theosist factions. Thulean raids still caused some trouble for Umidia’s southern colonies.

Battle at Ember

During this time, the Thuleans were making great efforts to counter the Umidian weapons. Captured galleons were sent back to Saint Gustparsberg to be disassembled and studied in detail. New shipbuilding ideas were gathered from far overseas. The result was the Thulean ‘Ship of the Line’, stronger and typically larger than the Galleon, but lacking in one area – Thulean metalworkers and engineers simply couldn’t duplicate the quality of the Umidian cannons (at least not in such a short space of time). Instead, the new Thulean ships were outfitted with an assortment of basic cannon-type weapons and heavy ballistas.

Thulean shipyards went into overdrive. A large number of ‘Ships of the Line’ were eventually built, and were suddenly used en-mass to attack the island of Ember. The Umidians had settled into a pattern of long ocean patrols and counter-raiding tactics; they struggled to gather enough ships to meet this new threat. The Umidian garrisons were in a very dangerous position by the time help arrived in any numbers.

The Ships of the Line did well in their first major battle, proving to be basically unsinkable by cannon fire (at least, the current average of cannon fire). But the Thulean’s own cannons also did little damage to the Umidians - despite a lot of training, they couldn’t overcome their inexperience, or the limits of their less-sophisticated weapons. The fearsome new ‘Sea Dragon’ troops helped even the odds once things came down to boarding actions. These were evolved from the old heavy Pictish and Koltyre infantry, highly trained and carrying gunpowder grenades amongst other weapons.

Both sides were looking to score a crushing victory over the other. But Ember ended as another inconclusive battle. Few ships were actually sunk or captured. The Thuleans battered a hole in the Umidian defences, and landed troops to besiege the city of Ember itself. But much of Umidia’s ocean fleet was still intact and lurking nearby…

Meanwhile, the rebels in the interior of the island started fighting against both sides.

The Thuleans still had grand plans for the re-conquest of the east ocean, but found themselves stuck at Ember for now.

The North-West war

The fragile peace in the north-west of the new continent was shattered by Thulean soldiers, as they marched out from Kintag to invade Kinland proper. The Thuleans were eager to show that they were still a strong power on the continent. They made good use of cavalry forces along the coast, and Kinland’s new capitol of Kellhauk was soon captured.

The Kinlanders managed to regroup in the dense forests of the interior, and the Thuleans were finally stopped at the town of Rohuo. Though by this stage, Kinland had been reduced to the status of a minor chiefdom.

The Scota tribes rose up against the Kinlanders, and ended up fighting against the Thuleans also. The Scotans refused Thulean offers of citizenship, as they still hated the Thuleans for taking their land in the first place.

The Great Chief of Hanawauk declared his support for Kinland once again. Hanawauk massed an army in the south, and pushed into the Thulean’s Yahoss peninsular, overwhelming Thulean garrisons there. Hanawauk even sent some supplies to aid the Umidians while they were attacking Mahutan island (see above).

The Thulean-backed army of the Alganwi took the opportunity to push further into the north of Hanawauk land.

‘The Ascension Wars’

Events moved quickly after 380 AD. Almost all the all the nations of north-west asia became involved in this war...

First and foremost, Tian made the long-awaited move of invading Jara. Great speeches were made in Tian. Ormash was vilified as an aggressor and destroyer of the peace. Tian’s leaders declared the beginning of the ‘Ascension Wars’ to being peace to the world under Tian’s protection.

The cavalry reserve forces were called up, and there were also great efforts to recruit and equip more infantry soldiers. Roughly one million men were now serving in Tian’s army. The size of the combined invading forces was (at least) equal to anything in history.

Hordes of Tianese cavalry quickly isolated Jaipav, Jara’s former capitol. But the city had already been abandoned. The Tianese then pushed up to the central mountains region. Ormash and its allies were waiting patiently at the heavily-fortified city of Kaiep, but the Tianese didn’t attack here. Instead, a separate army advanced through the southern jungles, spearheaded by the ‘Rangers’, whose ranks had recently doubled in size (though this had diluted their level of training).

As for the rebels who had risen against Ormash’s troops, these were not exactly supportive of Tian either. The Tianese expected a warm welcome, but the Tianese often had to fight their way through the rebel-held areas of the jungle.

Ormash and Kymash joined forces to try to block the southern advance. Ormash had been in the process of fortifying the area. The Tianese used various tricks and traps to capture some of the unfinished forts. Many hard battles were fought in difficult terrain (often steep hills covered in jungle). Tian’s Rangers had an advantage here, but troops on both sides suffered appallingly. Many of the casualties were from heat and exhaustion.

Meanwhile, over in the west, Ryakhi joined forces with another large Tianese army, and charged down from the coast towards the rebel-held area near the city Naman. The rebels were more cooperative in this part, but many still ended up fighting against Tian as well. There was some skirmishing around Naman itself, but the Tianese didn’t press an attack there. Instead, they turned back to the coast, towards Ormash’s city of Khanapor…

Videssos had now joined the war against Ormash and Chamka, but a combined Videssian/Ryakhi fleet was defeated by Ormash (see below). The waters around Khanapor were raided, but they couldn’t be fully blockaded. Ryakhi also had bad luck on land also; Their army suffered from a series of mishaps and mistakes, and they often ended up isolated from their allies. A strong force of Ormash cavalry sallied out from Khanapor and badly mauled the Ryakhi army. Tian’s army was finally able to besiege the city, but it is still holding out at this point.

Tian was also looking for support from Garuda. But that country didn’t enter the war, or make any obvious attempts to support either side. Garuda’s leaders downplayed their treaties with Tian, and claimed they had been defensive treaties only (which wasn’t strictly true). The country remained focused on overseas trade and founding new colonies in the west.

…

Apart from the south, there has been little fighting, considering the large armies involved. Jaran loyalists and most of Ormash’s forces are well fortified in the mountainous regions of central Jara. Tian has almost succeed in isolating them there - the last corridor of land between Jara and Ormash/Kymash is being desperately fought over. Supply trains are constantly attacked by Tianese raiders, and there are already some serious food shortages in the north.

Jara’s people are suffering from all this, and they have mixed feelings about Tian. Some of the rebels are siding with Tian, while others are actually rejoining the loyal Jaran army, in order to defend the country.

Ormash’s armies were equipped with new ‘Vodash’ artillery pierces (named after the city where they were first designed). Basically these are small battlefield cannons, light enough to be towed around by a few horses, or to be housed in existing forts. Much was expected of these weapons. Although they had the effect of frightening and disorganising the enemy, it was soon found that they were not so useful for actually killing them.

The cost of the war has been enormous for Tian. Its manpower is stretched to the limit, and the treasury is once again shrinking fast.

Invasion of Chamka

Meanwhile, Videssos had launched a huge invasion of Chamka, with no less than six separate armies invading from different directions, by land and sea. The Chamka had been expecting an attack, but were left paralysed, as they tried to decide where to send their forces. Fortunately for them, the Videssians were also confused - The scale of the invasion was bigger than anything the Videssians had attempted before. Their plans came undone as different armies became delayed or ended up in the wrong areas. The Chamka had a chance to reorganise, and were able to defeat the combined Videssian/Hojo forces in the north-west.

Inevitably though, the superior quality of Videssos’s weaponry and leadership began to tell. The commanders drew up new plans and continued to advance. Chamka lost a lot of troops in an attempt to defend Angor and Kiwat. The Cham used the dense forest as best they could, but constant ambushes were not enough to prevent the loss of all the major forts and towns.

By now, Videssos had also declared war on Ormash, citing their ‘disrespect for Phosists, and the continual threat they pose to regional stability’. Ormash honoured its treaty with Chamka, and had already dispatched a small force of cavalry to help them, backed up by some ‘Vodashas’. The force was intercepted at sea by a combined Videssian/Ryakhi fleet off the coast of Chamka, and battle ensured.

Ormash’s ships were outnumbered two to one. Some were overloaded with horses, and most of the ‘Vosashas’ were stowed below decks. But despite all this, things went well for them. Many of Ryakhi’s galleys managed to crash into each other, and were then overrun by Ormash’s caravels. The Videssian ships didn’t have much better luck.

Still, by the time Ormash’s expedition arrived, the King of Chamka had gone into hiding (along with his treasury), and all central authority had collapsed. Local tribes rose up in rebellion. The remnants of Chamka’s army withdrew to the south-west coast, where their generals tried to re-establish some kind of control with the aid of Ormash’s forces.

Large areas are still in anarchy at this point. Videssos’ imperial machine will take some time to digest this new chunk of territory. Hojo has also begun pushing to reclaim its old territories along the western river area.

Invasion of Koyon

Videssos wasn’t finished yet. A separate invasion was directed at Ormash’s islands north-west of Oda/Koyon. The Videssians had just enough force to overrun several islands, before they were stopped by stormy weather and lack of supplies.

Further south, the country of Oda collapsed into anarchy, as rumours spread that their leaders had agreed to annexation by Ormash, to the dismay of the people. At the same time, the Videssians tried to encourage Oda to attack Ormash, promising to stay out of former Koyonese lands if they did so. For now, the people of Oda were too busy deposing their government to intervene against Ormash’s garrisons.

There was also another rebellion in the former Koyonese lands - partly inspired by Videssos’s arrival, but also by the announcement that a surviving heir to the throne of Shimazu was taking up arms, to reunite Oda and Koyon and to expel all foreign troops. The Shimazu cause began to gain support from all sides, while other areas were carved up by emerging Oda/Koyonese warlords (including some former Ormash allies, who decided to desert). Videssian ships also began to disrupt Ormash’s supplies. Things became very chaotic.

Ormash’s garrisons are now in a difficult situation. Reinforcements of cavalry (along with some ‘Vodash’ artillery) have saved them from collapse for now.

Antalese-Orion War

Bazilevs Karlyk was greatly respected as a military leader. In his youth, he had led his father’s armies against the Jurguk rebels. Few dared to question the Bazilevs as he unveiled his new plan for defeating the Orions - a great march across the Ak-Ibir desert by over a hundred thousand troops, to take Ghulaman by storm; and then to punch right through the mountains into the heart of Orion Empire, to capture the city Oro itself… What’s more, the Bazilevs would personally lead this campaign from the front!

But first, Karlyk ordered some big changes to the Antalese military. Gunpowder ‘hand cannons’ were introduced, based on Orion’s weapons, though somewhat larger, and designed to be anchored into the ground for firing. Larger cannons were developed for use in sieges. Much was expected of these weapons, but the Antalese still lacked the expertise to make them really effective. Most of the Antalese troops continued to rely on the traditional crossbow (which still had more accuracy and a faster rate of fire).

The ‘Antalese Legionaries’ were created; these were partially inspired by the soldiers of ancient Argos and Mycenae. They carried a real mix of weapons – either a ‘hand-cannon’ or a crossbow, with a sword and shield for defence, and light armour for mobility.

The ‘Saraian Guard’ were effectively mounted crossbowmen (or hand-cannoneers), also equipped for charging the enemy.

Karlyk’s commanders also tried to reorganise the army into a system of regiments and brigades. There was some real forward-thinking here. But there were conflicting demands – the army was being reorganised, increased in size, and equipped with new weapons, all at the same time. Inevitably, there was a drop in the level of training and organisation.

…

After reorganising the military, Bazilevs Karlyk set out on his great campaign. First task was crossing the desert. Antalese commanders tried to organise supplies of water as best they could. Friendly Ak-Ibir tribes pointed them in the direction of watering holes. But after a week in the trackless desert, around half the troops were incapacitated by thirst and exhaustion.

Nonetheless, the town of Ghulaman was swiftly captured. The Orions were busy buildings fortress along their whole front line, but they had not anticipated such a bold attack by the Antalese while Altyn-Sarai was still threatened in the north.

The remaining Antalese infantry were soon pushing into Orion’s pre-war territory for the first time, with Bazilevs Karylk at their head. But it wasn’t the swift advance that Karlyk had wanted. They soon hit the eastern Orion mountains - the road to Oro wound its way through many easily-defended passes, and was surrounded by fortified Oruist warrior-temples. And the weather could turn nasty – the higher mountaintops were covered in ice and snow, even near the equator. The Orions had no trouble in delaying the Antalese until reinforcements arrived.

The Antalese remained in high spirits, emboldened by the presence of their great Bazilevs. They might still have pushed through, if not for the worsening supply situation. The long supply route now crossed the Aki-Ibir desert and into the Orion mountains, with ample opportunity for accidents or ambushes along the way. The Antalese were beginning to starve, in addition to being sick, wounded or exhausted. Before long, only a quarter of their soldiers were still standing. Karlyk himself became ill. The Antalese generals decided to risk Karlyk’s wrath, and convinced him to withdraw back to Ghulaman - under attack all the way by Orion raiders and fanatics.

Antalese morale was dealt a blow. Karlyk survived the ordeal, and successfully passed the blame to his generals, thus maintaining his image as a great warrior Bazilevs, although his health never fully recovered.

…

Meanwhile, the Antalese cavalry and camelry began a war of skirmishing and raiding, reaching deep into Orion-held territory. The Orion’s countered with large forces of light cavalry.

The Knights of Mycenae sent their best troops to join the Antalese, partly out of gratitude for being allowed to raise their own taxes.

Although the main invasion failed to get anywhere near Oro, the capture of Ghulaman blocked the road to Baralyk and Eluai. Together with the raiding, this put all of Orion’s eastern gains under greater pressure.

The Antalese navy and army attacked northwards along the coast from Akguai. The Orions were eventually forced to abandon Eluai as the Antalese and Knights of Mycenae closed in from several directions. The Antalese also close to capturing Talulak in the north.

The Antalese had put a lot of effort into fortifying the approaches to Altyn-Sarai, but these were never tested. The Orions were sitting tight wherever they could, building up a strong advantage in troop numbers.

Meanwhile, some of the Orion infantry was sent away to deal with the Gyu rising. The Antalese gave hope to the Gyu, and they fought on bravely. The Orions retook the city of Gyunai, but no more than this.

Claiming the throne of Agre

The restoration of Saruk’s old libraries (see Saruk) led to another war against the Antalese. The following passage was found in an old book on the Antalese-Agrinese wars (roughly 260-330 AD) :

"And thus Alevese came upon Na'ar. A convert himself, the exile was welcomed with open arms and soon gained a love for the Divinist way of life. It was received with nothing less than utmost joy when the marriage of Shave-al-Zyba (the eldest daughter of the king) and Aleves was announced to the people."

Kalhipan Jarek of Saruk gave a speech in the newly-completed Ihali-al-Gadan (Mosque of Gardens), announcing that ‘proof’ of Savaria’s inheritance of Agre had been found. It seemed that after he ‘dissapeared’, Bazilevs Aleksevs V (the last Agrinese Bazilevs) had converted to Theosim, and married into what is now the royal line of Savaria. The current Dalhipan of Savaria was allegedly a direct descendent of Aleksevs. This would technically give him claim to all of the current Antalese Empire.

The Sarukians were keen to help their Savarian allies claim what was ‘rightfully’ theirs. Though they limited the claim to the area around Herakleia, which had been the last capitol of the old Agrinese.

The Sarukians made the long trek into the north to join the Savarians on a great campaign. A huge combined army was gathered at Al-Na’ar. The Sarukians also built some siege cannons for the campaign (which were of better quality than most, thanks to their contacts with the Umidians).

Originally, the plans called for a quick attack to overwhelm Herakleia. But the plans grew to include the provinces of Beer-Sheva and Tergamon, and things didn’t quite go to plan.

…

Firstly, the Judeans fought fanatically to defend Beer-Sheva. Even when the city was overrun, bands of fanatics still held out in the mountains. The Theosists suffered many casualties.

By the time the Theosists reached Tergamon, the Knights of Mycenae were well aware of the approaching danger. The Knights didn’t have any reinforcements to send, but they still made things as difficult as they could for the attackers. As the walls were finally breeched, most of the Knights had escaped overseas, along with much of the city’s wealth.

The Theosists now turned on Herakleia. The city had been preparing its defence for the best part of a year. Though the Angrinese didn’t have much of an army in the area, they were joined by citizen militia and a handful of Mycenaean Knights. A palisade was built right across the narrowest parts of the Isthmus, taking in parts of the old Mycenean canal attempt as a useful ditch.

Compared to the average Agrinese and Mycenaean soldier, the Theosists were much more lightly-armed. The Theosists took heavy casualties as they broke through. There was fierce fighting as Herakleia changed hands yet again, to be renamed ‘Hamadan’ by the Savarians.

The Sarukians wanted to press further, but the combined army was too exhausted, weakened and disorganised. It didn’t help that the Antalese fleet scored a lucky victory over the larger and more sophisticated Sarukian/Savarian fleet (though the Antalese also had ‘Mycenaean fire’, as used by the Mycenaean Dromons in the mediterranean). While the Theosist fleet was regrouping, it was very difficult to bring any kind of supply from the Sarukian homeland.

The Sarukian troops are also upset about being so far away from their homelands.

The country of Byzar decided not to enter the war, at least not yet.

As for the local people, few of them are happy with Savarian control. The claim to the throne of Agre seems hollow, at least until the Theosists can prove that this is more than just another temporary advance by outsiders into the region.

Wars in Africa

Under the rule of the Theosist empires, africa was a very peaceful place, compared to the rest of the world at this time.

The tiny state of Tamlki slowly conquered more territory from nomadic peoples.

> Tamlki: -1 Light Cavalry

In the southern islands, the ruling dynasty of Kenbu was deposed. Rival warlords divided up the last remnants of centralised power. The story of the brave country of Kenbu has come to an end, at least for now. Great temples and observatories lie in ruins. But the faith of Tarrism is still strong in many places.

> Kenbu is no more!

The state of Tongu took advantage of the chaos. Their warriors captured much of the ‘straits of Zantlwan’. The Tonguans began spreading a distorted form of Theosim, mixed with Tarrist beliefs.

Wars in Europe

The Knights of Mycenae made a cautious advance northwards from the city of Mycenae itself. The area around the city of Tacimos is still held by powerful former-Cyrasian warlords.

The Aeonist factions around the city of Liphos (in what was the Cyrasian Empire) invited Prince Heinrich of Germanica to become their leader. He arrived with a small Germanican army and set up the vassal state of ‘Karinthia’ (see Germanica). Shortly afterwards, Prince Heinrich and his Germanic-Karinthian army scored a great victory over a much larger force of Talibrians, who suddenly invaded from the north. This did much to boost the popularity of the new regime.

The Germanicans halted the Talibrian advance into Germanica itself, with a mixture of bribery and some small-scale battles. The Talibrians were pushed back on all fronts, but are not yet completely removed from Germanica’s old borders.

Videssian envoys helped negotiate a peace between Norgar and Talibria in the north-west.

Lanvinquist fanatics wanted to continue spreading their ideology across europe, but cooler heads prevailed. Freiland’s leaders agreed to peace with the HRE, and surrendered the province of Brouforlard as agreed. Tensions eased across this part of europe…

The province of Geldra was encouraged to rejoin the Thulean League as Lanvinquist fanaticism died down, and pro-Thulean feelings began increasing again (not to mention the signs of Thulean armies massing near Argwen).

The ‘Partiot’ movement was quickly quashed by the Thulean leadership (see Thulean League), but the Thuleans were sufficiently distracted to allow High Chief Offa to establish a new unified Juhtish Kingdom. A handful of Germanican troops arrived to support Offa. Germanican missionaries and envoys became well established in the area.

> Juhtland reappears!

Pictish fanatics continued to cause trouble in remote places of the Herbidean islands. Strange Nordic/Phosist/Ultimist cults took hold in some places. Some of the rebels also took to piracy and raiding across the Sea of Skye, as the Thulean navy was concentrated elsewhere. The rebels have got their hands on manoeuvrable ‘longboats’ from Norse traders and exiles.

Almoth’s independence war

A small army of devout Aeonists arrived from Carinthia and Seculia to aid the ‘holy struggle’ against Almoth.

Still, with around half their troops diverted to other areas, the Germanican generals didn’t have as many troops here as they would have liked. War and fanaticism had now become a way of life for Almoth’s people. Many of their women and children were now veteran soldiers. On the other hand, the Almothian’s lacked any real inspiration at this point, and seemed to have no real aims apart from survival. The Germanicans were still the ones with the initiative as they struggled to reach the coast.

The port city of Talbar held out, but the Germanicans did finally reach the coast further south. Almoth’s position was severely weakened. But the isolated western areas continued to fight on bravely…

The Tuscans then decided to attack Almoth in the back, invading the isolated western area around the city of Almos. This had been the site of Almoth’s ancient capitol. Almoth’s veteran soldiers fought fanatically to keep it, and they succeeded, despite being greatly outnumbered. The Tuscans lacked the stomach for this kind of fight. Often the mere sight of Almoth’s battle-hardened troops was enough to send the Tuscans fleeing.

Meanwhile the exhausted Germanicans were finally making progress, capturing some of Almoth’s towns and cities in the north-east. Only those wiling to submit to Aeonism and the Emperor of Germanica were spared from death. Around half of those captured were stubborn enough to refuse this offer.

The Germanicans now had plans to take Somerfyld, but the Almothians took to the hills north of the city. Resistance in these areas was too strong for Germanica to push any further.

After several more gruelling sieges and constant skirmishing, Germanica has once again failed to crush Almoth completely. Almoth’s leaders have managed to achieve great things with few resources. But Almoth is still more of a battlefield than a country. Things are only getting more desperate.

The Plague...

The impact of the plague has lessened. There are still scattered outbreaks across most of europe, asia, and also in the new world, especially in densely-packed cities. But there is nothing like the mass deaths as suffered by the HRE in previous years.

Africa seems to have been spared from the plague, for the most part.

Other Events:

Taej Empire

In 390 AD there was a fire in one of the palace buildings of Tianzou, which destroyed some priceless treasures. Some saw this as a sign that heaven was displeased with Emperor Ding (especially as it came at the time of Pangari’s furthest advance into the Taej heartlands).

Confidence was generally reduced by the Pangari invasion, even though the Taej land army was never beaten in a full-scale battle.

The anger over the census and tax enforcement began to die down, especially as the imperial government showed a lot of leniency (though some troublesome tax-dodgers were used as forced labour).

Taroism still lurked in remote areas, but there has been a backlash against this ideology. Most people have come to associate it with war and suffering. The Taej were also busy deporting Taroists to Zhizhou in the new world (until it became a vassal of the Chimuko – see ‘war in the south of the new continent’).

Emperor Ding maintained a tight grip on the vassal states. Quipeng didn’t rise up in support of Pangari, though there were supporters in some areas.

New Panga

The rise of the Pangari Republic left the New Pangans feeling confused. Most supported the new order in asia, mainly because they couldn’t see what else to do. Talk of an independence movement came to nothing. The New Pangans seem to be too tied up with Pangari in terms of trade and defence for that to make any sense.

The New Pangans are busy establishing control over the areas conquered from Hocatelco, and helping Pangari do the same in the north.

The growth of the Chimuko is seen as something of a threat.

Over the years, the Pangans have been sending copies of all their great books to New Panga, for safekeeping. There are now many fine libraries in the city of New Panga itself, with a growing number of scholars and philosophers based there.

Thulean League

The panic caused by Umidia’s attack began to subside a little. The Thuelans found that they could still trade perfectly well with New Panga and west asia, via their colonies along the coast of the new world. Trade began to stabilise, though the routes to south africa and the mediterranean remained off-limits.

The ‘Patriot’ movement was crushed under the rule of Prince Biscarii, the new ‘Lord Protector’. A time of national emergency was declared. Several aristocrats were executed after they allegedly conspired with Umidia against the republic – charges they strongly denied. Others were mobbed by the so-called ‘blue coats’ (civilian militia whipped into a patriotic frenzy, under the control of the republic), and forced out of the country. The wealth and property of the ‘Patriots’ (most of them were Yssian aristocrats) tended to find its way into the war treasury of Prince Biscarii.

All this fuelled the bitterness of the Yssian aristocracy towards the league. Though they cant really do anything at the moment.

The Thuleans tried to borrow money from Germanican, Norgar and Videssian merchants, with mixed results.

The province of Geldra is settling back into the League, though there are still signs of instability there.

Umidia

Umidia’s colonial formula is working in most areas, despite the difficulties of the war with the Thuleans. Umidian merchants and government officials have established themselves in most the occupied islands, and a steady stream of trade goods is beginning to reach the coast of Umidia (especially the cargoes carried by well-armed galleons).

Umidia asked its own merchant guild to supply ships and money for the war, with the side-effect of giving the traders more influence in both the government and the military.

Confidence remains high at home, though the overseas garrisons are not in great spirits.

Saruk

The Ihali-al-Gadan was completed in the city of Saruk…

On the outermost of the four sides are the water-gardens- huge pools of water filled with exotic plants and fish. The gardens are fed by one of the many minor rives that fed through Saruk, and the gardens form a moat that separates the building from the rest of the capital on a semi-island. Farther in is the Interior Gardens, a series of shrub filled lines that form a sort-of-amaze around the interior. After that you reach the courtyard- a paved region where the general masses come together before/after services. The building- built in an elongated square- is topped off with a golden dome and four towers reaching off the corners. In the middle of each four sides is a gigantic door, which is only opened during times of worship. The Ihali-al-Gaden is the greastest Ihali (Mosque, translated loosely) in Saruk- and the Theosist world.

Saruk was busy with trade and exploration. Much of the coast of africa was mapped in detail, along with the southern islands. Their ships also travelled to Yutan and Taej in an attempt to revive trade routes (without much luck, thanks to the Pangari invasion there). Some ships even travelled to the HRE (see HRE), though they stayed clear of the Thulean League (with all the anti-Umidian fever, they could easily be mistaken for enemies).

Sarukian settlers continued to fill the void left by the destruction of Tarrist power on the mainland.

A tax was levied on every family with less than five children – this did more to annoy the people than it did to encourage population growth.

Relations with Umidia were improved in some areas - Trade was increased; efforts were made to stop violence between Saruk’s version of Theosim (Mahal) and Umidia’s version (Dareh) in the east ocean region.

Relations were also hampered – Saruk’s missionaries were quite blatant about spreading Mahal Theosim across the east ocean islands, especially the areas occupied by Umidia. The King of Ohukal was also converted to Mahal Theosim. And Umidian currency was removed from Saruk in favour of Sarukian ‘Kohls’, which were also placed in Savaria and Saruk’s vassal states.

Antalese Empire

‘Academies of Alchemistry’ were set up, with the main goal of developing improved gunpowder weapons for the war with Orion. As with other countries, the finest Antalese minds were being drawn away from philosophy and science (and ‘oiukumenography’), and were being drawn into the war effort.

Bazilevs Karlyk made the controversial move of acknowledging Ugasan’s gains in the south, thus avoiding any further battles with the Taej Empire on land or sea. The generals were not too happy with this, or with the failed invasion of the Orion heartland for that mater.

Karlyk still has strong support from the people, especially as it seems the empire is slowly regaining its lost territory. Anti-Orion feeling has been stirred up throughout the various regions of the empire. Many people willingly joined ‘citizen militias’ in the major cities.

The invasion by Savaria and Saruk hasn’t made much of an impact on the people yet. But the war cut short a brief period of trade and exploration in south africa by wealthy Antalese merchants.

The Knights of Mycenae (or the Order of Mycenae) are also strong supporters of Karlyk, after he gave them powers to raise their own taxes.

There is great potential for trade between the Antalese and south asia, but very little trading is taking place, due to the various wars in the way, and poor relations with the Taej. The Antalese can still benefit as a link between europe on one side, and Videssos and Tian on the other.

Orion Empire

The defeat of Bazilevs Karlyk’s campaign in the Orion mountains was hailed as a great victory by Orion’s leaders. Though some land was being lost, there was a sense that the empire was growing stronger rather than weaker.

Confidence was generally high.

The Orions were probably hit worst by the disruption of trade across asia. Funds continued to trickle into the development of industry, especially the great foundries under construction at Oro.

Orion’s level of industry and metallurgy is unmatched in the world. The Pangans can match the quality of Orion’s steel and iron, and the Taej can match the quantity of metal produced, but neither can match Orion on both points.

Ormash

The Pangari-Taej war was an opportunity for Ormash to stick its nose in tot eh southern seas. Trading posts were set up on an island south of Zhizhou, and also on sparely settled areas of the south asian coast, near Tosunga territory. There has been little investment due to the demands of the war with Tian; these settlements might not be sustainable.

In the north, the war situation doesn’t look too good, but Ormash’s soldiers have not yet been defeated in a major battle. The morale of the troops on the mainland remains high.

Missionaries were sent to the new world, to help the spread of Orhadism in New Panga and Chimuko. Efforts to encourage pilgrimages to Ormash were not successful, as there is currently no real religious centre for Orhadism, though the faith did originate in the heartlands of Ormash.

Tian

Great Hall of the Khans was completed in Aral Tiyu. Partly because of this, a wave of patriotism swept through the country.

Confidence is high among the people, except the merchants…

War with Ormash has closed some of the valuable trade routes, while at the same time as the treasury is being emptied to support the huge military build-up. Merchants at the great marketplace of Tianem Square are facing higher taxes, with fewer goods to sell. Trade across asia has declined in general.

Videssos

There was a sense among the people that Videssos had now become a truly imperial power. Phos seemed to be favouring the army, if not exactly the navy also. The military commanders had no hesitation in taking on the war with Ormash. A mood of invincibility was sweeping through the capitol.

Growing trade with the Thulean League and Norgar went some way to compensate for the loss of trade with Ormash (and asia in general).

Videssos’ maintained its influence over Talibria and Norgar in the east.

Germanica

Confidence and optimism were on the rise, as it seemed like the Almothians and Talirians were being beaten.

Germanica’s role as centre of the Aeonist faith became more established. This conferred more authority and prestige on the Emperor. Germanica also became the leading exporter of the faith to other lands (though it faces strong opposition everywhere).

Apart from the vassal kingdoms, Germanica seemed to have tense relations with all its neighbours. Despite this, there was a steady increase in trade and industry.

The plague began to disappear from Germanica, some said this was a blessing from Aeonis to his most loyal followers in the world…

Holy Rovien Empire

Emperor Maximilian I ascended the throne in the autumn of 381 AD, after the much-loved Laurent II died from old age without any children of his own.

It was a tense time – Maximilian was young and unproven, and had new and unconventional ways of doing things. All along the empire’s borders, there was the still threat of war with the Freilanders, Umidians, Almothians, Thuleans, and even the Germanicans. The plague was still raging in some areas of the empire.

These tensions quickly died down as Maximilian showed himself to be a capable leader. Peace was achieved, and a sense of calm descended. The plague seemed to disappear – perhaps helped by Maximilian’s funding of sanitation works in the main cities.

Not all the generals were happy about the peace – the HRE now had a large army at its disposal, arguably the strongest in europe, with nothing much to do except patrol the borders.

The emperor then set his sights on making the HRE into a real trading power. The A new fleet of ships was built for sailing and trading on the high seas (borrowing heavily from the expertise of Thulean merchants).

While Sarukian voyagers reached the Rovien coast (see Saruk), an expedition to the HRE reached Sulchan in south africa. Other expeditions travelled to Pangari-held areas of the new world. The HRE also increased its trade contacts across the mediterranean.

Further voyages planned to reach as far as the Taej Empire, though none have made it that far yet.

The HRE was able to benefit from the Umidian-Thulean war. It became a neutral ‘middle-man’ that both sides could trade with. Though, the war also brought dangers - the east ocean was awash with privateers from both sides. The Thuleans had an especially loose hold on their privateers, many of them didn’t think twice about attacking vessels from the HRE. Of course, there were also many pirates and sea-scum who would attack anyone.

The fledgling colony of ‘Saint Avrile’ was set up on one of the islands that officially belonged to the ‘Yihamcoross’ kingdom, though it was effectively ruled by a local chieftain, whom the HRE merchants were able to bribe. The colony was constantly harassed by pirates and Thulean/Yihamco privateers.

Not all of Maximilian I’s ambitions could be accomplished, though many great achievements were made in a short period of time.

Story bonuses: +1 point for Thlayli and Luckymoose

No regional spotlight yet. I might add something like that later if I get the inspiration for it.

Religion map on request. I haven’t done a religion map yet, since not much has changed.

@Everyone, any ideas what I can call the new continent, like instead of ‘the new continent’? I can think of anything. I might just go with ‘America’, like ive named everything else.

@Thlayli, I don’t want to add a separate ‘medium infantry’ stat if that’s ok... I’ll use ‘Heavy’ as anything that isn’t ‘Light’. Also, I meant to say ages ago, please feel free to change any of the stuff I did with the Antalese when they were NPC, like moving the capitol again etc.

From Germanican Empire
Tusca

Germanica wants to avoid conflict with Tusca, however, we would like our lands returned to us before the Almoth invasions. To compensate we will divide what remains of Almoth between the two of us.

From Germanican Empire
To Almoth

If you submit to the true path to Aeonis and the Emperor we will spare you lives. The war cannot be won no more. Germanica has vast stores of manpower to call upon while everyday Almoth shrinks. If you accept peace Germanica may be merciful. If you refuse Somerfyld will burned to the ground and every soul within its walls killed.
