You are probably using the in-house editor. The general rule is that you can only use one of the editors in a session (load-save cycle). If not, the memory stack might get confused and start using the wrong names for items. When this happens, do not change anything. The program is only confused, you need only save and reload.

However, if you do try to fix everything so it looks right it will be completely screwed up the next time you load - which seems like what happened to you.

Don't use the in-game editors to rename anything. It will hose up your rules.txt file. You can tell if it is damaged if its size is not around 26KB. Use a text editor to rename things.

In other words don't rename the Extra Air and the Test Units?

I did that and it went all screwy as above....? But it screwed my terrains up in the wrong order... and All I did to them was change 2 minor attributes - didn't change any names or anything and it didn't fix itself after saving and re-loading...

Confusing stuff... (well, for me anyway! )

Let be clarify a bit.

There is no need to 'save' per say, bad choice of words on my part. When you exit the scenario editor by clicking OK, the rules.txt etc are already updated.

Lets say you fiddled around with the tech tree. Then when you start the improvement editor and you notice the first item is not palace - you know the thing's messed up already. You should be able to reset everything by clicking CANCEL instead of OK. If you were to reload the scenario again, the problem would correct itself and you can continue using the improvement editor.

It is safer to use notepad but there are draw backs as well - it is very easy to make a small mistake which causes the game to crash on loading. Also for things like editing the unit abilities, it is much easier to use the in-built editors.
