The Follow up to Wonder Building: Poll 4.2
Under our new covenant, with enough dissention to a particluar plan a poll and vote will be called for.
As pretty much I expected, there seems to be a good deal of differing opinions regarding which wonder to build at the moment. I initially opted for Magellan's over Bach's, but the counterarguments are very valid as well. Some of the arguments given: Magellan's: 1. Being build by other civs, so if we don't build it now we will likely lose it. It does not seem that other civs have Theology. 2. Extra ship movement on this island-type map will allow for much greater speed in trading, settling, and moving troops. Our ships can outrun others as well if needed. Bach's: 1. We are heading for a Republic and hopefully a Democracy very soon. This will help with happiness issues in terms of troop movements. 2. The happiness factor will allow more workers and less entertainers. It will also allow us to run with minimal luxuries - putting more into science and taxes. 3. Easier to get "We Love.." Days when we wish. Now, I've included Sun Tzu's and King Richard's in the mix as well, though I don't think that they'll be a factor. So let's vote! |

Bach.
It affects the entire empire and can make the cities much more productive. If we weren't about to enter a Republic, I would vote for Magellans just to get it, but unhappiness can criple us when we are trying to explore and fight. |

I'm voting for Magellans on the strength of Kev's arguments in the previous thread, and with the caveate that we pursue Bach's as rapidly as possible, like right now. With rush buying caravans it is possible to pursue two wonders at the same time. Lets complete Magellans, but get somebody started on Bachs immediately and rush caravans if needed to get it.

All right then. I voted for Magellan, despite being the one who was arguing for Bach, but I recall that the AI never seems to reseacrh Theology or when they do, they don't build the wonder. In the OCC game I described in the Stories and Tales forum I built Bach while I was waiting for my spaceship to land so the AI rarely build it before me, even in this extreme case. My vote depends on our rushbuying caravans to complete Bach as soon as possible though. It is a useful wonder to have in the representative governments and is maybe one reason why you see so many AI cities in revolt when you explore.

Arguments for both seem equally convincing to me. If we can, let's try for both.

Bach's is already being built in Olympia, I believe.

That's what we're arguing about. Basically, with the caravans we have, we can finish it straightaway, but since other civs are already building Magellan's and it appears to be a very watery map then we may want to switch now and build that straightaway instead.

Duck, can you please change my vote from Bach to Magellans?
My reasons? We are playing this game at Emperor level, my mind is always at Deity. So unhappiness shouldn't be quite the problem I was originally thinking. Second, if we can stiff some of the AI with having to dump Magellans after putting lots of shields into it, great. Third, The AI never goes for Theology, so we should be able to build Bach when we will need it for unhappiness. Last edited by Duke of Marlbrough; Mar 28, 2002 at 10:27 AM. |

How about building the both? We could finish building Bach's in Olympia and then rush build Magellans in another city.

I think the intention is to eventually build both. But, I don't think we can finish Bach's and then also try for Magellans before the AI finishes the ones they are working on. We don't have enough money or caravans to get both done right away. So, the decision needs to be made as to which one to build. Either Continue with Bachs and let Magellans go to the AI, or grab magellan now with plans on Bach later. With our Caravan happy production (very good choice IMHO) we should be able to get Bachs and Prob. leo's up at about the same time.
