An idea I have had.
I have often found it annoying, when there's a resource within your borders, on a tiny little island that you can't get to till much later in the game.
Enter, the revolutionary bridge! It would allow units to pass across it to the land on the other side, but perhaps only a space or two, no stupidly long distances. Not sure if this would be moddable into the game, but I'd love to see a feature like this. |

The scaling would be off. Even if you think about the tunnel between England and France, that is insanely large and ancient people could not build such a thing.
Just my opinion, bro. |

I don't know, considering that boats cover an entire tile, and soldiers are bigger than the cities they defend, it wouldn't look all that weird.
Besides, who said it was for an ancient people? Whilst it would benefit them greatly, it could also benefit those in the 1800's and below. |

However, the 1800's is later in the game, considering you start in BC, that's over a thousand years passed.
So, no, no discrepancy. |

What if you had workboats be able to build ferrys on coastal tiles and fresh water lake tile only? If a ferry is built on a tile no ship units (other than work boats) could enter the tile but land units may. Building a ferry tile on a water tile would consume the workboat as well. Later, ferrys could be upgraded to said tunnels. (like railroads & roads).
Just a thought.

if small varying islands of size looked more realistic and played more of a vital role in the next Civ then i would be for a ferry of some sort, then upgradeable to a bridge or tunnel system, but at considerable cost.
