Idea:Mines/Minefields...

This one's a unit(i think)...how about mines?you have a unit called "mine layer" that's produced by a building called "mine factory",he goes out and lays mines on a tile of terrain wich after so many turns turns that terrain into a mine field, any troops or units crossing it loses(or a chance to lose)so many hit points, kinda like bombardment works i guess...this would allow you to set up a perimeter with out having to keep troops out there that could be better suited somewhere else.

You could use workers, I suppose, and create a custom improvement? Causes damage to enemy troops every time they enter the square?

I think minefields are somewhat abstracted by fortresses, albeit imperfectly. Try it out, though, I'm curious to see what kind of results we can get.

I's like to try it out, unfortunatly i have no clue as to how to do such a thing. That's why i'm just giving ideas, let the people who know how handle that if they like anything I say.I'm slowly learning how to mod what i'd like to mod so hopefully soon I can do more than just type ideas.

You could always make a unit called "Land Mine", make it invisible (like the submarine) and make it Immoble.

give it a SPECIALUNIT_MINE tag. and edit the workers to be able to carry "SPECIALUNIT_MINE"

Then just unload the mine where you want it.

The problems I see here are:

1) Limiting workers from dumping Mines in enemy territory.
and
2) There isnt any code to "disable" said mine. Putting up a impassible "wall" of mines seems to take away from gameplay. A unit would have to be created that can see/disable the mines.
3) I think flying units, like helicopters, would be damaged by a land mine, obviously doesnt make sense.

Im sure there is some SDK code around here somewhere that would allow this to happen.

Well for flying units or stuff like that,if it can't be coded maybe modded so they take no damage from mines so there's no effect?

You could make the mines land or sea units (domain:LAND/SEA).

That way, they cannot attack airunits. But I realise it will be the airunit attacking the mines...

You can give any unit worker abilities.
Minelayer/sweeper to BUILD:MINEFIELD/REMOVEMINEFIELD
Or sapper units to do both slower as unmechanised unit.

Minefields/seamines are more suited tobe improvements, like other fortifications.
However improvements do not have nationality, so mines will be indiscriminate.
Also I have no clue how to make terrain or improvements deal damage to units.
They will make working a tile impossible so -3/-3/-3 yield changes.
Defensive bonus for units inside. +75%?

There are some benefits to making mines immobile units:
(With several first strikes.)
-Mines would be cleared by the first unit entering a tile.
-They could be stacked to create high density fields.
-Mines can be made invisible easilly.
-Mines would only attack enemies.

Some drawbacks:
-no yield change to occupied tile.
-More complex minelaying (eg transport of mines from city or pythoncoding to create a custom minesummoning ability)
-

It's very simple to add a mine functionality to the game. However, because of the scale of the game I don't think it's realistic for land units.

For naval operations, it might be interesting to have Minelayer and Minesweeper ships, and naval mines, but still...I like lots of detail but there is a limit at which you become bogged down in 'micro-managemnet' of units and the game play is affected.

I agree you don't want overkill, but then again i'm sure there's some warmongers out there who would love something like this.
