Smithy & Weapons promotions

I'm new to TAM and hence a bit wondering about smithy and how its work.
1. Sometimes it looks like new unit doesn't get copper/bronze/iron/steel promotion, even if built in city with smithy and with appropriate metal resources available.
2. How can I improve weapons promotion for old, experienced unit? From this forum one should think it is possible, but even stationing unit in city with smithy for several turns doesn't work somehow (I got this idea from SG, where players often referred to "transfering unit through capital" to get the promotion).
Or there's some other way, how to do it?
3. How can I show all resources, which are atm available for me?
4. To share resource between 2 cities on islands, or island/continent etc, I need to reasearch Astronomy? It doesn't look like so.

1. Some units don't get them, like Javelineers and - ahem - Armored Javelineers.
2. Just walk into a city that has a smithy. There probably is still the bug of it not working when you use the unload from ship button to do it.
3. The icons in the upper-right of the city screen. I'm not sure whether the icons are correct in the latest version but if they're wrong I think you can mouse over them to see the text.
4. Good question, I remember it not being what I expected.

Weapon propotion is a nice feature for the game.
do you plan some armor improvement?
do you plan some weapon promotion for archers?
