SGOTM 04 - Geezers

Turnset 1870 AD - 1880 AD

Apologies for the delay in posting. Had the odd hiccup where I had to reboot as well as having to go into work.

Turnset went as expected. Ghandhi made landings by Vienne & Durnovaria as well as sending various forces towards New Saria. All repulsed at the cost of some pillaging and some units. Izzy only sent one or two single attackers. I upgraded a few units so the gold is slightly less healthy. I drafted an inf from Durnovaria but apart from that I've let the cities grow. I've started railroading to help our forces move about the country faster. Main highlights were:

  • Combustion learnt and Flight should be learnt during the next turnset.
  • Jenarie's university in Bibracte finished. :) I thought of going for Oxford but decided against. We still need military.
  • I decided to bite the bullet and started the FP in Ning-hsia.
  • Hanny's completed the docking bay.

I really think we should use that GG in our southern lands. I suggest Napa Valley. New Sarai 's quarry is too prone to pillaging. One oddity is that Ghandhi's last landing by Vienne was on the hill W of Vienne rather than that nice bit of ice. Perhaps the AI eventually learns what are bad moves?

It's that time of the year when my thoughts turn to freedom from work. Or in other words I shall shortly be off for a couple of enjoyable weeks sailing round the coast of SW Turkey. I leave on the morning of 18 June and return in the evening of 2 July. All this subject to vagaries of the airlines and airport security alerts of course. Contact is likely to be fairly patchy as most of the spots we visit are small villages. Most likely chance will be midway through the holiday when I'm in Marmaris.

Izzy is ALWAYS a pain. If she appears in one of my SP games I almost kill her every time asap as otherwis she attacks each and every time.

Is SGOTM05 already announced ? Whether I will play depends a little bit on the scenario and difficulty level.
 
This sounds a nice idea. Another alternative would be to research Rocketry for gunships to counter armour. Both of these seem to require the same amount of beakers but the estimate for Flight is 13 turns as opposed to 11 turns for Rocketry. :confused:

I'm tempted by Rocketry but possibility of using airports to move our troops from our southern lands sounds pretty good as well.

That would be a result of so many civs knowing Rocketry as opposed to Flight...I haven't looked at the save, but I would presume that at least one AI has not researched Flight yet, but has researched Rocketry. Hopefully that means we can pawn it off on someone!

Enjoy! I just got back from my own cruise, it was only a week long, and was to 3 Caribbean Islands, rather than a Mediterranean/Turkish cruise, but cruises are definitely great fun and great relaxation!

You might want to submit your name to Alan before you leave though, as I suspect SGOTM5 will begin on July 1st.

@mark: nothing has been announced about SGOTM5 yet, other than that it will be a vanilla game...that's why Jenarie thinks we'll need a replacement for her, because she lost her vanilla disc, thus can't play vanilla.
 
Just played the turn set and it was not good on the new world side. Because of the stack of artilary units Izzy had I split the team into two and ended up getting badly beaten. We lost both teams in the most spectacular attack I have everseen. Izzy have my respect. We probably needed about 2 teams of about 15 units each to just to survive the onslaught. That was just awsome...:eek: .....in a very bad way. Both AI's displayed excellent defensive and offensive tactics. The game would have been over now had Gandhi teched in the military side. Very impressed.

Anyway we have our first destroyer, military acadamy in New Sarai and we are now learning Roacketry. Everyone, even izzy is heading to stars but not Gandhi.

looks like Gandhi didn't do too well against us, but it looks like Izzy whooped up on our Infantry :(

I'm off to bed right now, gotta work in 9 hours...I'll try to take a look at the save tomorrow after work...maybe then I'll actually have something to contribute for once lol
 
Hmmm... The forces in the new lands aren't in quite as bad a state as I feared. That said, I think we should defer any further incursions into Izzy's lands for a while and rebuild our military. Can arty attack gunships?

I notice we managed to kill one of Ghandhi's frigates which is good. Shame we couldn't kill his galleons :( , however maybe we can use our transports as additional naval attackers? :hmm:

How on earth did Ghandhi get a unit far enough into our southern lands to pillage that well? :mad:

I presume we go for Industrialism after Rocketry?

Where should we head after Industrialisation? There seem to be three options to me:

  • Switch off science, or at least drastically reduce it, and build loads of military. Probably also switch to UniSuff so we can buy units.
  • Continue heading for military techs whilst building up gunships/attacking Izzy.
  • Beeline Fiber Optics and build the internet whilst building up gunships/attacking Izzy.

I suspect it will be one of the two options mentioned first. However the third option might be interesting as well. ;)

On the military side there might be something to be said for taking back some of our former lands since it seems pretty clear that Ghandhi's forgotten about teching and space. :mad:

I should point out that Htadus suggested this quite some while ago and was outvoted. At the time I think most of us felt that there was still a chance that Ghandhi would get a move on and that we shouldn't make it harder for him. However Ghandhi's had the opportunity and passed it up so I think it may be worth revisiting this subject.

I am for option 2. Who knows, we will be able to wipe Izzy out and might be able to stop others from launching if we want to by just taking thier capital.

As for taking some of Gandhi's cities. He wont have horses to build cavs if we take back the two horse Cities. That alone will do the trick for us and give back our old border since our culture is still predominent there, so we also get some rich lands that horseless Gandhi can not pillage easily.
