Assuming we make contact during this term, what are we looking to do? Trade as much as possible even if deals aren't great or trade only if we get the better of it? Have a close relationship with 1-2 civs and try to lock out the others or try to deal with everyone? Sign long-term peace deals or avoid commitments? Etc.

Well, it's a 5 team game, so we must make sure we don't end up on the wrong end of a 3 vs 1 or 2 vs 1, but I doubt that as we don't seem to be on a landmass where the teams are close together. We haven't met anyone so far, so I doubt we'll meet two teams soon.

I think the best thing to do now is to get a good alliance with one team, while trading around with everyone.

If a trade is good for us, and good for the other team, it's bad for 3 other teams. So I think we should take any reasonable deal that we'll profit from.

I would work towards establishing amicable relations with teams we meet this term. There is no reason for us to provoke other teams, either through war or aggressive diplomacy this early in the game.

Concerning trading, we should trade when it is advantageous to us or when the deal on the table is equal, but I would avoid making deals that have us giving up loads of goods for little in return.

I would like to become good friends with 1-2 civs and have only normal relations with the remaining teams. Right now, I see The Council as our biggest late game threat, so we should either take them out early or make an alliance with them early on. Early game threats will be Iroquois and Celts, due to their UUs, so establishing peaceful relations with them early on will be key, especially if we share a landmass with them. I view FREE as the least threatening team, due to their probable lack of strong military and their small and weak team. I see a dog pile on them in the mid to late Middle Ages highly plausible, and thus will try to milk our relationship with them into believing we are their great, trustworthy friends.
