Dutch leader pic really Joao
I looked at the leader pic in the BTS info center, and I know everyone has decided it's of Willem de Oranje, but there's a map in the background that I'm pretty sure shows an early map of the New World, and in particular Brazil.
Yeah, the clothing looks similar to Oranje's, but I believe the two men lived in *relatively* the same time period, and what with the Treaty of Tordesillas and all, I'm calling that out as the pic for the Portuguese leader. |

I believe he is called "Oranje" on one of the sites showing the pictures, and was confirmed as Willem van Oranje.

I can't remember where, but someone from firaxis confirmed it was "oranje". Case closed.

I initially questioned this too. My first impression was the black hair and face looked mediterranean - too swarthy for a Dutchman...
However, the LH is wearing an Elisabethan collar, and Joao II predated Liz I by about 100 years. In fact Joao II and Isabella I were peers - they knew of each other! The Dutch rise in power occurred during Elisabethan times, so it should follow that that LH is William of Orange. (Closer inspection shows his skin is fair even though his hair is black.) Additionally, for quite some time the Dutch were in the habit of wearing severe black clothing as formal/public apparel. Black atire was the fashion in Holland for quite a while; and even though their clothing was often conservative, their views were rather progressive for the times. The Netherlands is an interesting country of contrasts Willem van Oranje is most likely - I'd really be surprised at this point if it wasn't!

Look at the Wiki pictures of them. It's most likely William.
