UTF-8 Support: Getting the Welsh 'ŵ' to show in CivIV
Hi,
I've been beavering away diligently at a Welsh translation of Civ IV for a while, and have now reached a point where nearly all of the in-game text and menus have been translated. However, one small thing is currently bothering me: I can't get Civ 4 to represent the unique Welsh character 'ŵ', which is important as the Welsh word for water is 'dŵr'. And there's a lot of that in Civ, especially on my favourite Lake maps. What I've tried: 1. Changing the encoding to UTF-8 in the XML files like soUnfortunately, methods 2 and 3 produce a hollow square rather than a the desired character and method 1 produces a high horizontal line. Does anyone know anything about the intricacies of UTF-8 with Civ 4? I've searched but I've found no real information other than the fact that the Russians seem to be using it in their translation. Thanks! |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply Fierabras. The codes I've tried are &# 373; and &# 0175; (both without the space betwween # and the following number). Using &# 373 produces a square box character (which seems to be the default for unrecognized characters), whilst using &# 0175; produces a high horizontal line character. Anyone have experience from some of the Slavic languages? Thanks. |

I believe that I've tried (I'll do so again), but the circumflex on the 'w' and 'y' was not a feature of the ISO-8859-1 set. It wasn't until the introduction of UTF-8 that they were available without resorting to hacks.
Even then, it was apparently only introduced at the request of members of the Dutch Unicode delegation who had holidayed in Wales and seen the characters on road signs, rather than at the behest of the supposedly 'British' delegation. The swines.
