capitals

Okay, whenever a capital city falls or is taken over, a Civilization is usually split in two. Is it possible to have more than 7 civilization competing against you if all the capitals are taken over?

IIRC, No.

One of the requirements for a Civ to split is that there are less than 7 civs already in the game. In other words, there has to be a spot for the new split civ to use.

Another requirement, as Smash has pointed out before, is that the attacking Civ needs to be inferior on the power rating, compared with the Civ whose capital is taken.

Yes, but most scenarios have a small paragraph in the events file, saying:
@IF
NOSCHISM
defender=ANYBODY
@THEN
@ENDIF

That prevents it from happening.

I've split civs before, and I was always inferior to them on the power scale. In particular, I was playing OCC conquer the world about a year ago, and did it alot.

If you were mighty, then someone had to be supreme. Here are the ratings:

Pathetic - Weakest
Weak
Inadequate
Moderate
Strong
Mighty
Supreme - Most Powerful

Coupled with your statement, this means that you (The English) were Mighty, and the Russians were Supreme. You had 6 or fewer civs surviving in you game, and when you took the Russian capital, civil war swept its Empire, and a new AI was born. And the Russians were hostile to it, and eventually went to war with them, at least at first.

If you have a .SAV wich is saved just before the capital is taken, and you had a Split with a Supreme rating (or 7 civs), post it so we can have a looksie.... but with the Split tests I've made (not exhaustive though), plus the wisdom of Smash & others, I'd pretty much conclude you must be inferior and need an open civ slot for civil war to have a chance. I've never ever split a civ when I'm supreme.... and like many others, I've killed hundreds of AI capitals as supreme ....

I also made the same tests, and it is fully correct what you said starlifter, rest assured.

Less than 7 civs and inferior power rating is what is required.
The problem is that the power rating does not equal to actual power or empire size. The calculation takes many different aspects into account, pretty difficult to follow.
But those are the requirements.

Misunderstood, I thought you meant the attacking civ had to be pathetic or something.

No worries. You never know... sometimes someone discovers something that has been overlooked, which is why I often refer to a .SAV for unusual stuff... plus, I've never exhaustively tested the civ split, just never known of an exception to the above guidelines.
