*Insert a hearty cheer for the habs here*

Two 5-goals victories in a row!

...And 5 goals is more than we had against the Panthers the rest of the season.
...or all of last season.

GO HABS GO!

Poor Florida teams, tho. The locals definitely have no hockey spirits, because the vast majority of spectators both at Tampa and against the Panthers where cheering for the Habs.

And now, to fuel speculation in Montreal...

Koivu is missing tonight, officially due to being sick. Now nothing to trigger speculation in that...

The speculation comes from the fact that unlike many previous absence of Koivu (including his one-year absence while he battled cancer), where the Habs just made-do without a captain, the Habs gave the C to someone else tonight (Alex Kovalev, who has gone from zero to hero in the last six months).

Also, in other news, hail the first family goal of the Kostisyn brothers (yes, Plekanec actually scorred. Andrei and Sergei got the two assists, though)

As a casual to less-than-casual NHL fan, I must say that game was awesome to watch today. Makes me wish they did it more.

Seconded. I wasn't about to think about watching it on New Year's Day, but outdoor hockey is just a brilliant idea, any and every time they can arrange it . . .

Yes, very fun to watch. I enjoyed expecially the deciding which side would
be best as far as concern for the wind direction. Dang it looked cold out there, I would have froze my butt off.

A good trivia piece to know for hockey fans:

How many "Gordie Howe Hat Tricks" did Gordie Howe have during his 30 year career?

1/9th of the times Shanahan has had one.

but a gordie howe hat trick is nowhere near as cool as a Bill Mosienko hat trick (3 goals in 21 seconds)

Yup, Gordie Howe actually had only one "Gordie Howe hat trick" in thirty years of playing (1955) -- Almost amazing he did not have more, when you consider his game.

Now if it was a 1 goal; 1 assist; and a nice elbow to the ribs --> I think he would have had hundreds.

As a long time Red Wings fan, I love the crow Damian Cox must be eating after putting the cart just a bit before the horse last year by writing this article:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=2636562

Quote:
It seems clear the Wings are on a downward spiral. The question is whether that will simply take them to the middle of the Western Conference pack for a couple of years, or whether the fall will be much greater than that.
All the Wings have done since then is finish tied for the most points last season, come within 2 wins of the SCF's and lead the league at the halfway point this year with a record of 30-8-3.

you forget two things, egroen.

1) The wings are the oldest team in the NHL, by average player age (sure, chelios helps that, but still...)

this means many players are going to retire. on top of that, finishing consistently well means your prospects are worse, as you have worse draft picks.

In short, that means as your stars age and you get nobody in to replace them, a fall is expected.

2) THE CENTRAL DIVISION IS GETTING BETTER!

Seriously. Take last year as an example. 24 games against St. Louis, Chicago, and Columbus.

22-4-6 vs central teams, and nashville was playing well.

thats 50 points. take colorado, in the Northwest, which often produces multiple playoff teams, and the division is renowned for being very tough. They get less divisional points that way.

just a note, Colorado vs East last year was 7-3-0, while detroit was 6-3-1

detroit tied for most points in the league, colorado missed the playoffs, while their interconference games where around the same.

next, go into their western games. avs 19-17-4, wings 22-12-6. not a big enough gap for all the points that separate first and 9th in a conference.

division games, with 18-11-3 vs 22-4-6 is the difference.

and since 3/5 teams in your division are getting better (though nashville.....), you will in the long run lose that divisional edge.
