I really think the option will be added, since it's that easy and everyone agrees it's unbalancing. However, i think it would be nice to change them slightly so they are no longer unbalancing.
Anyway, we don't know how they might be changed in Shadow, so we are mostly making winds as we speak here. Let's wait and see, after shadow comes out, if there is still some issues, it will be time to bring it back to the table.

Unlocking special resources

I have to agree with those who think that taking resources like Yggdrasil out of the game is a bad idea. However, in my last MP I stumbled over three of them (Sun Mirror, Ygg, Bones) on the same continent and within a 4 to 5 city range. So, yes, in certain circumstances these resources can break an MP. I think that unlocking them via technology is a good idea. Why not declare them to be magical resources and thus require an adept to build a special building on them (requiring alteration, with a build time of 20 turns or so), better yet, make it necessary to sacrifice a level 3 adept on them to get that building? If this were done you would still get a significant amount from those places, but would have to be quite advanced to actually use them, thus their advantage would be balanced.
