i believe the AI always leaves their leader in their capital city... basically making it a game of taking the capital

what are the strategies to ensure that others cant settle where the cities where?? presumably negotiate without finishing them off?? |

If you don't want a massive land grab, either have settlers already where you'll want to settle in their old lands, or take the capital last. I usually go with the latter method.
It is rather annoying that the AI never ever moves the King. Would be much more challenging if they did.

From what I've seen, the AI rarely moves their king(s) anywhere but their capital. And I haven't ever seen the AI change its capital.

Nope. The instant their king dies, their cities all get razed. Unless you force the King to leave, then the city is ruined.

how do you get the king to leave..
in my exp ,you can also not get cities for peace even when they only have a king or so left in the capital-is this correct? |

Dunno, I guess you just stack up huge armies outside his capital and wait.
