Q re XPs when upgrading units

(Playing Warlords; don't have BtS.)

As far as I can tell, whenever I upgrade a unit, it loses all XPs above 10. Very nasty when you have a unit that has 15-16 or 22-25 XPs but little prospect of earning more if not upgraded. Any way around this?

Two smaller, related Qs:

I think I observe that Chariots cannot be upgraded until you have Cavalry. True?

Also that you cannot upgrade TO a UU, although you can upgrade FROM. True?

1) i don't think units promoted by a warlord lose XP.

2) chariots can definitely be upgraded into knights

3) wrong, i think. IIRC, i have definitely upgraded longbowmen into redcoats.

Re upgrades and XP loss, I am aware that the units that a Warlord joins don't suffer -- at least for a simultaneous upgrade. Haven't checked for later upgrades of same unit. But such units never exceed 2% of my total forces.

Any way to avoid XP loss that could apply to more units?


Re Chariot->Knight, I confess that my memory is not clear. I was positive that I could not do Chariot->Horse Archer.


Re upgrades to UU, I just played a game as France and could not upgrade anything to Musketeer. Is my mistake that upgrades to Musketman aren't possible either?

Set to whatever you like (0 might or might not mean no limit - i never messed around with this one). Other than this there is no way around loosing XP to upgrades.

You can upgrade to a UU. Got to love those CRIII Axes from the early rush after they get upgraded to Berserks . I never cared to upgrade to (or build for that matter) to a Muskete unit. But i do know that Chariots can be upgraded to Horse Archers - provided you know the tech (HA require Archrey and Horseback Riding, both very popular 'skip it' targets, so my guess is, you just did not had the tech).

Thanks for the mod info. I assume this means that you really can't keep more than 10 EP any other way besides a GG.

Re chariots->horse archers, I am positive that I could build horse archers (I did) but could not upgrade. I cared a lot because I had a warlord unit with c. 40 XP.

yeah, can't upgrade to muskets ever! that is partially why they are so unpopular.

i don't remember being able to do chariot to keshik which is the only time i would consider it really. HAs are a waste of money.

At least on warlords, you cannot upgrade chariots to horse archers
