I am new here and am VERY desperate for help. I have Civ IV Gold edition and my computer according to the package can run it. I installed the first disk...fine...then went to put in the 2nd and nothing. It just locked up. I ctrl
+alt+del and restarted it. I put the 1st disk in again...the game auto played and doesn't work (duh) so I closed it and re ran the install. Same thing. Instead the 2nd + times around a window auto plays. I have waited until it popped up and hit okay. I have just hit okay. I have let it pop up, closed it then hit okay. I am at my wits end and I REALLY want to install this game and play it but I can't even seem to do that. I went as far as calling tech support and was told "just hold down the left shift key when the 2nd disk starts to load so it doesn't autoplay the disk" as a solution.

welcome to civfanatics both of you
![]() especially during the holidays it is a bit quiet in these parts of the forum - so replies do take a while, patience is a good advice ![]() Now could you please repeat the problem. As I understand it the install failed but it thinks you have it so that you can not reinstall - is that correct? What operating system are you using, and you are talking about Civ Gold edition correct? |

Copy the files to your hard drive and run the installation from there

If using Vista you may need a later patch first. But it sounds as if the game is not registering correctly when installing it. I would remove it with the Control Panel's "Add and Remove Programs" so at least it is more what Windows (any version) really states to do with any program. Then make sure that it is completely un-installed and start over after Defragging your harddrive, making a logical drive if it is one big hard-drive, and putting some games on that logical drive. Of course then the CD-Rom or DVD-Rom may have a different letter and any program installed using the old drive letter like D:\ drive or such may not uninstall, in which case you have to go to the folder of the game and try the un-install program or go through more steps. Of course, maybe you can keep the Drive Letter the same and just add a logical drive and Defrag it and Check it first. Games install better if the harddrive is not all cluttered and Fragmented in the first place, and any program.
If not, it should install correctly and then apply the latest patch if Vista. The game was made for Windows 2K and Windows XP before Vista came out, but a later patch is fixing those problems within the game or at least attempting to do that as of now and the last few months. |

Okay, I got it! Here's what the problem was and how it got fixed:
Problem: Everytime I tried to install the computer locked up upon putting in disk 2. Solution: Completely exit out of my anti-virus program and make sure that all anti-virus related processes were stopped, and it installed without a problem at all. I have no idea why that would cause a problem like that, but it did. Is this something that already is in or should already be in the FAQ or someplace? I know a lot of people on here have install issues...would that be a common fix? Thank you for all of your help. I'm going to try to not be one of those beg and runners so I am going to try to stay relatively active on the other boards. For now I am going to go play this game that I have been trying to install for 3 days. Thanks, JoP |
