Question Need help getting rid of "background programs"

While running WinMe on my computer, there are certain programs running continuously in the background, sucking up precious resources, that serve absolutely no purpose I'm aware of. By pressing CTRL ALT DEL I can see a list of these programs. Some sample names are:

Cpqeadm
Motmon
Wkcalrem
Hpoopm07
Devgulp

etc.

How can I get rid of these? I am pretty sure that these programs are not anything I am using. They might be spyware because I use Kazaa, but I downloaded a program that was supposed to get rid of spyware. None of these programs appear on the taskbar (to the left of the clock) and they are not in the Start-up folder. Can I get rid of them without doing any harm to my computer, and if so how? Thanks in advance for your help.

Click Start --> Run --> MSCONFIG
Click on the "Startup" tab.

Then uncheck the programs you don't want starting.

What in the world are those programs?

BTW there's also System Restore that takes up a lot of resources, but I can't remember whether or not you can turn that off in ME.

No, I don't remember that...I remember you running Programming and Tech Support.

Just an addendum for the FYI to the newbies.

u can disable System Restore in Windows ME

1. right click on My computer and go to properties

2. click on performance tab and click on file system.

3. click on troubleshooting tab and tick the box that says disable system restore

4. click ok and u will have 2 restart your computer.

Background programs can be started from your registry. You might want to take a look at this HOWTO.
