Tactics is where it's at.
The little things is where it all starts. 1 soldier +4 solider =1 squad etc... all the way up to an entire Army. That same concept should be how you plan your tactics. one tactic+1 =1 etc... and you have formed your strategy. Any ideas you come up with can be useful tactics. You would be well off if you researched them before trying to implement them. Always have tactics you can fallback on. Your grand strategy depends you are prepared for ANY tactic the enemy may throw at you.

Are there any specific tactics you'd care to share, or is this just general advice? I have absolutely no war tactics (other than build-a-bunch-of-units) so any ideas would be appreciated.

Don't be to bold, Fake an all out attack: then run like HEEEL only in the hopes of having the enemy follow you into a waiteing ambush, another trick when you run is turn around (VERY PRE PLANED) and have your troops whom seem to be in total disorder, turn and and kick but. Mao Tse -Tung. Guerrilla Warfare. Hit and run, by pass the heavys and whack the small enemy posts: but not always!

Err... are you you getting this based on real life, or some game other than Civ 4? Most of your suggestions don't really translate into anything meaningful in game, and those that do are at best pointless. The AI is in some ways too stupid to fall for these tricks - they couldn't spot disordered troops in the first place.

I am under the impression you have placed no value in the word tactic. What do you really think I thought we were dealing with real people here? Like it or not ,life ,game, tactics are what you use to form your strategy. Perhaps you think Mr.Meir has been making this game for a very long time with a stupid AI that alot of people just love to play? Perhaps you are so advanced you need to go to a higher level? Thank you for judgeing a very critical word in warfare on 4 sentences, they were only meant to give people something to think about.

Your second post also lacked any useful tactics, containing some vague suggestions which seemed to be based on real life rather than the game - and indeed indicate limited knowledge about how the game works. Running away in apprarent confusion might lull a human into a false sense of security, but the AI doesn't really have a sense of anything. Any value in such actions relies on an opponent which can become overconfident, and indeed rationalise the actions of the human player rather than simply responding. The AI may be improving as the series goes on, but it has a long way to go, and still plays nothing like a human. Quote:

Do you have any knowldge about AI CIV tactics?
What would be a game tactic, by the way this is a stratagy, make lots of SSS,hide, build, when they come, you know they will, hope you got the bigger guns? That sir is grand stratagy. Tactics are what leads to them and keeps the enemy off your back while you build an empire out of (dare I say tactical field stratagys?)

If understand this "article" correct, it is about importance off tactics?
Well the Romans was great at organize a army, I would even dare to claim that“s reason they got so big. I am happy that the game keep the army organized and just have to handle things on a "company" (don't know the English word) level. So your advice is hard to convert into CIV 4 concept if you don“t explain how. My old philosophy teacher said to me, "You shall always explain concepts like you are learning a 4 year old. That will make you think about how, why and what you are saying and even if it is worth time saying. If you cant explain it to a 4 year old, you havn“t grasp it yourself." Well I am sorry but I think your article is advice at a very general level, that common sense and experience teach you quite quickly. It is like a saying we have here in Sweden, that we say when something is so clear when someone say something that all can figure out: "Better rich than poor, better healthy than sick" |

@EarthGod
If you are a war historian, you know that one paragraph is hardly enough for a abstract, even more for a article.... If you have a idea that you think that deserves some kind of development, please do it or simply post your one paragraph development in the Strategy & Tips forum. I'm sure that you didn't noticed the stickied thread by thunderfall in the top of this forum....

I will not make your tactics up for you. By the book_tactic maneuver, device, stratagem, trick, scheme, plan, ploy, method, approach, tack. Tactless is a word we have not got into yet. Again by the book for all my [GAME] critics out there, undiplomatic, impolite, indiscreet, insentive, crude,c lumsy, awkard, inept, bungling. Now if you folk want some real [GAME] advice; read around and yes concoct tactics that you can use and do not for get this little part, aginst your enmy; that you learned about. Please there is such a wealth of info out there. You go out there, get it and use it.

Ah, so this "Strategy Article" has now morphed into "hey, there are useful articles out there." Brilliant.
![]() BTW, Dave, this does not belong in Strategy and Tips either. It's General, since there is absolutely no discussion of strategy, or tactics, or any tips. Edit: Actually, it may well belong in Off-Topic, since I don't detect any references to Civ here either...

Don't be fooled! He's only feigning disorganisation, incoherency and weakness of position! He'll turn and rout you with a 2000 word treatise any second!

Anyhow, I suppose this thread is only iceing on the cake, for a much more in-depth article coming shortly. I can guess it will be something like:: "To build a town, you must first start with a cottage." "To launch a space-ship, you must first start with a space-ship part." "1 ss-part, plus another ss-part, = 2 ss-parts." Note:: tac·tics n. 1. a. (used with a sing. verb) The military science that deals with securing objectives set by strategy, especially the technique of deploying and directing troops, ships, and aircraft in effective maneuvers against an enemy: Tactics is a required course at all military academies. b. (used with a pl. verb) Maneuvers used against an enemy: Guerrilla tactics were employed during most of the war. 2. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) A procedure or set of maneuvers engaged in to achieve an end, an aim, or a goal.

It's nice to see the forum get a bit of a fantasy ambiance, but I'm not sure starting with a Troll was really the best option.

They should have a 500 word minimum for starting strategy article threads, and preferably use some sort of pre-moderations...
