UU continue UU ( if you give a Preat to Tokugawa , it will still be a Preat ), promos are still there and XP is scaled if you're giving from a Cha leader to a non Cha or the other way around
And there are no diplo modifiers for gifting units ( a little IMHO , but seeing how cheesy you can win in Charlemagne Mod by gifting units to the Pope.... )

I remember someone (LK?) saying that he gifted units to colonies and got a fair trade bonus in an SG (Portuguese one, I assume).

Gifting units is a great strategy if you're a peace monger and want to influence a conflict.
It can also be a nasty way to earn some cheap GG points as I've never seen an AI turn down the gift. Gift a bunch of explorers, declare war and have your tanks roll over them

You can also give cheap units to the AI for defense if they are an ally and getting smoked in a war, and they can upgrade if they have enough money (the AI gets slight upgrading discounts for units).

Couple of times now I've gifted Mech Infantry to a backwards Vassal, and watched two (2) GG's get born in one ill-advised-enemy turn

i will use gifting in pretty much all my games. On maps where you have colonies, it's easier to take your more out dated units and gift them to the colony. This way you're still maintaining a large force across the empire, but you don't have to pay for all the units.

During my only domination victory (sigh, I’m working on another one right now) giving away 2 modern armors was huge. It let a small civ ally be a continual pain in the ass to a larger civ/cultural victory threat while I was dealing with another foe altogether.
Is there anybody out there who reads and understands the codes who could tell me if they are sure whether or not gifting units doesn’t make some sort of hidden diplomatic bonus? Because this small civ I gave 2 modern armors to was fiercely loyal for the rest of the game, and I think he was cautious for centuries before that.

If there is a large bruiser rolling over other civs who have no chance to defend themselves but the time isn't right for you to deal with the bruiser yourself...
give away some submarines with tactical nukes and watch the good times unfold.
