A Very Odd Culture Flip

Here is the situation: I am the Greeks, on a continent with me at the South end, the Romans and the Bablyonians in the middle, and the Egyptians at the northern end.

In the Industrial ages I started a war with Egypt, for land-grab and for resources. I took a small city of theirs on the most northern tip of the continent (Note: my nearest city is about 50-70 tiles away, and through Roman territory). After struggling valiantly, the city was taken back. I really didn't care to much, made a peace treaty, and played for a peaceful win.

Near the end of the game, that city flipped to me. I hadn't owned it for about 100-150 years. The city was about 125 tiles from my capital and about 20 tiles from the Egyptian capital. Any thoughts on how this could happen? I found it quite odd.

If it had some of your citizens in it and you had a higher culture than Egypt it could very well flip to your side.

MOST Flipping cities are "very odd". Why should this be different?

This example was relatively sensible compared to some of the whacked out Flips I've seen.

That is certainly correct. As a good leader, cgannon64 treated his citizens well, and at least a few them must have converted to Greek ways. After that, it is a matter of "luck."

I'm not sure, but I think the city didn't grow while I owned it, and all I built was an airport.

Must have been your charisma then, if not your benevolence.

Without at least one of your nationals (or overlap), I didn't think a city was supposed to flip. The only way to get nationals is with culture (or workers). I thought. Or maybe they convert slowly even without cultural improvements. . . . Hmmm.

That's an idea! If you have a distant, ethnic city about to be overrun, join the workers to the city so you will have friendlies in place. One day they may raise your flag and declare a revolution.
