Problem patching to 3.17

I'm trying to use the in-game patch utility to patch Civ BTS to the new (June 27, 2008) patch, which I believe is 3.17. (Is there another way to get that patch?)

Anyway, after giving the order to patch the game, I am returned to the Advanced Options screen (i.e. menu that offers About This Build / Load a Mod / Check for Updates / Credits). There is no progress bar or any other indicator that the game is patching. However, clicking on any item, including the "Back" button, gives me a message that this action cannot be taken until the patching is complete.

This has been going on for about 90 minutes, with no change.

I have a high speed internet connection that appears, in fact, exceptionally fast today. How big is this patch? Could it conceivably be downloading it all this time? How long did it take you to download the patch? I'm concerned the game is just hung, leaving me staring at a blank screen like an idiot.

the ingame updater is buggy - download the file from here and run it outside the game
